Greetings all,

Please post your questions here. There are many actively serving and retired LEOs available to answer them for you.

Remember, that there are some topics that will inevitably be State-specific... so don't forget to go out and do some research of your own.

Ok here is the deal this has been stated several time this thread is *ASK A COP* not ask a volunteer firefighter not a academy cadet or correctional officer oh and also security guard but *ASK A COP*. Please all non sworn personel keep your remarks and comments out of this post I am being nice right now as many of my brothers and sisters know I can be quite mean. This is for people to come and post a question for *CERTIFIED* or *SWORN LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONELL*.

This is actualy a story with a question at the end, so please bare with me. One of my best friends got a call the other night to arrest a drunk driver. After about 45 min of searching, he finaly found the guy weaving in and out of traffic. So he lighted him and the suspect pulled over. When my friend, Chris, got out of his car the guy attacked him for no reason, other than stupidity. Chris reached for his extendable baton to wallup the guy and something happened. When Chris tried to extend the baton, he slung the two sleeves out of the handle. Hes said that the drunk stopped dead in his tracks and started laughing then just gave up fighting. My question is, how often does something like this actually happen? I know that this story is funny, but an equipment failure could mean your life.

This has never happened to me thank God! However, I would say it is an Officer's job to maintain working conditions for his or her equipment....being prepared being CERTAIN of your equipment may save a life...YOUR OWN! Fortunantly it worked out for this Officer you are speaking about. I do not know of any officers that do not check their equipment!

dsponder1980: I have never heard of an expandable baton do that. The only way I can think of is that someone has unscrewed the cap off the end of it that holds the sections together with a pressure clip and even then it would have to fall out the butt of the baton. It can't come out the top end. That is a pretty tightly screwed on cap. It should not have just come off for no reason. He should always check his equipment. He may have someone messing with his equipment as a joke or other reasons. Glad it came out ok.

Most do not offer this to HS students. Some LE agencies offer intern and student aide positions that require you to maintain a certain minimum GPA and often work around your school schedule. Some of these positions are paid and some are not. Best bet is to call all the local, state, and federal LE agencies in your area and inquire about this sort of job/internship. Also search www.usajobs.gov for info on federal student aide positions. You can always join the Explorers to learn more about LEO careers. At times having the Explorers training will help qualify a person to find a position in a LE agency when they otherwise would be overlooked.

Hello everyone....I am currently a 911 dispatcher (3 years) & have been actively chasing my ultimate goal of becoming an Officer (for 4 years) . I recently passed the 1st oral board (with an agency I would love to work for) and I now have an Lt Oral & then lastly a Chief interview. Its been a long time coming......and Im nervous yet excited at the same time. Anyone have any advice as to what the difference is between the Lt interview and the entry oral board exam??? I live in Northern Ca....work in the South bay.

Any help would be wonderful.I dont want to blow this!!!!

Can anyone help me get this new DWLI class-c and b figured out it is so confusing. Do you have to run a history on every one you stop.

Steadystar.....
If you stop someone for DWLI and their license status is NOT clear then you check criminal history or driving record to see if they have at least one prior conviction for DWLI. If they do have at least one conviction then it is an arrestable offense (Class A Misdemeanor) if they do not have a conviction then it is a Class C Misdemeanor.

from a dispatch point of view what you have to do is run a *complete* dl history. My understadning is how LC said it. Just make sure dispatch runs you the *complete* history.

That's like asking why does some peanut butter taste better than other? How can anyone really answer a question like that? First and foremost, this post is for serious policing questions. Not things like this.

Secondly if you believe you have a stalker you can call the police and report the situation. Give as much detail as you can and answer their questions as they are asked. Be direct and don't pussyfoot around anything. Whether or not someone called the cops about you is immaterial and will not affect any report you give. From what you posted it is next to impossible to tell what the heck you are talking about. You generalize too much and come off a little bit nutty. I don't mean to offend, but I do mean to give you the information you need to deal with your situation. Calm yourself, after you are calm then you speak. Or in this case type.

Don't let fear of what might be control your actions. If you are truly afraid this guy is stalking you or means you harm, then you MUST act to preserve your well being. Call the cops. The badge is symbol that means "We'll protect *YOU*!"

This is the only incident I have heard. Unless he had defective equipment, which companies that provide equipment for LE normally have great products, it should not have happened. He may have tried to install additional accessories and may have done it incorrectly. We are taught to do function check on our equipment before we leave the house, outside of firing projectiles. He may have forgot to do this.

This is where you would ask this question, but also go through this thread first. There are many links to previously answered questions including ones on becoming a LEO. If you still don't find your answer, then question away.

Sorry if this seems to be a "lame/waist of time question to some of you" But i dont really care. =) .. Anyways, I been wanting to be a Police Officer for a few years now. I'm 17 and a Senior at Millard West in Omaha, Nebraska. I just went to Hamilton College and applied for a Criminal Justice class.. My question is,:: Is Criminal Justice a "Required" class to get into the Police Academy? Now i've heard you cant get into the police academy until your 19? I'm getting ready to take Law Studies next semester in High School. But is it worth paying $35,000 for a class thats for 1 and a half years and 30 hours a week? Or is Criminal Justice something that would just help get me ready for the Police Academy?

Any feedback would be greatly appreaciated =) thanks for your time.

Brandon
