Oh I'm feel so sorry for you, I have to carry 9mm Bretta and IT SUCKS. Find something that fits your hand. I've heard some good things about the M&P's but nothing can touch the glock. I love my glock and I'll be buying a 45 baby glock

Brian, you may want to consider finding out what the restrictions/requirements are for a back up first... otherwise you might consider another beretta that functions the same way for ease of training....

If you can carry it, I'd recommend a Kel-Tec P3AT

I concur with HospitalCop...do some research with your dept first.  Find out if your allowed to carry a backup, then talk with experienced officers on your dept to see what they carry.  There may even be a dept approved supplier that will give you a significant discount on the purchase price of a second pistol.

My service pistol is a Glock 22.  For a backup gun I went with a Glock 27 because it's essentially the same gun, only smaller.  Same sights, same ammo, etc.  Another big advantage is that the mags for my 22 function in the 27, so no need to carry an extra mag for the backup gun.

Do your research before you drop several hundred bucks on the counter!

Surely there is a dept policy on back up weapons. If there is not and you are allowed to carry whatever then consider a compact version of the one you already have that way the ammo and mags are interchangeable.

The number you have dialed "9-1-1" is not a working number. If you feel you have this message is an error please hang up and don't call back.

If you can get yourself a little 5 shot revolver, .38 or .357mag, either one will do. After all it is a back up gun. You should on ly neeed it if the shiza hits the fan so to say

but if the $h!t hits the fan and you only have 5-6 shots that could be bad too. I stick with my original advice which is carry a compact version of your duty pistol. We carry a Glock 35 on our belt and a Glock 27 back-up if one runs out I can use the mag and rounds from the other.

Cat is right.  a S&W mod 66 2 1/2" is perfect and there are several still around.  I carried one on my ankle for years.

Still sticking to my original advice. Don't mix weapons and ammo it's bad juju.

Envision this, your primary weapon goes down so you go to your 5 or 6 shot backup, your back up runs out of ammo, now you have a loaded gun that doesn't work with two spare mags and an empty gun that works but it's out of bullets. Think this one through folks. And how many of you out there (honestly now) have seen someone damage a firearm by getting their rounds mixed up and loading the wrong round in a gun? Before we got the Glock 35 we had S&W 10 mm with our Glock 27. The rounds were so similar people from time to time were getting them mixed up. This and my first reason listed above are the reason all of our academy instructors were screaming to make the two interchangeable.

I think it bad news to discuss this type of information in public. Let the bad guys keep guessing. Talk to you FTO and the other guys in your platoon/squad etc and get their advice. I actually love DevilDogs system, Back Up and grab the shotgun or rifle!

If you cant find a smaller version of your duty weapon with the same caliber, then the next best thing is to stick to the same caliber and go to a different back up weapon.  Ath the very least you will have the familiarity with the round's recoil and performance.  You can also strip the ammo from your other primary mags to use in your back up in case of a  malfunction on your primary.

The first step though, is to follow your dept's rules for back ups.!!

( I used to carry a 5 shot, .357 mag snubby called a Ruger SP 101, its a fight stopper!!)

As a firearms Instructor, I have to agree with KSP on this one.  You hit the nail on the head with this.

I have a KelTec P3AT 380, but with several problems, I don't really trust it. I wish I had my Glock27 back. I traded it for a SigP229.  It's a bit bulky, but next time we qaulify, I may figure out a place for it.

I have a Kel-Tec P 11 9mm and it sucks, so I don't use it for ANYTHING.  I am sorta partial to Glock, even before our department went to them.

After several options including revolvers were considered, I went ahead and traded my spare Glock22 for a Glock 27. I got jipped a bit on it, but I think it would be for the best.

I'll start to carry it once I qaulify with it.

This is commonly referred to as the K.I.S.S. principle...keep it short & sweet....  SIMPLE is good here. The mags work in the back up, back up functions just like the primary.... it's a win-win all around when things are at the WORST! LISTEN to the man!

I have to concur. When I carried a backup, it was always at minimum the same caliber as my duty weapon. I normally carry a Glock 23, and used to carry the 27 as a backup.

The majority of these guys are right. You need to use a smaller version of what you have. If that isn't convenient use a glock 27. At least it will be the same caliber. By the way, if your department will let you, CARRY MORE THAN 2 EXTRA MAGS!!!!  I carry four. Next time your at the range think about how fast you can empty your mag. They go real fast. In a combat situation when you may be shaken up and not as accurate as at the range, those extra mags may come in handy. Don't lose your life because you ran out of ammo. May the Lord watch over all of us.
