Today we finished helping our local Parks & Wildlife biologist live trap white wing doves.  I had a blast.

We put three traps (supplied by TP&W) out on our front porch.  We ended up with 19 white wings and 1 mourning dove out of "our" traps over the 4 days of trapping.  (The trap at the Game Warden's house only netted 6.)

I'm totally pumped and ready to go for the next banding season.  I just wish it wasn't a whole year away.  We've already seen one of the banded birds come back to the feeders.  My wife got to release the last banded bird this morning.  It laid still in her hand for about 40 seconds before it few off. :-)

First of all, "Hi Chappie, nice to see you again"  (p1, Dave, old farts, etc)

I am pleased to see someone helping the wildlife, and obviously getting enjoyment from it.

Stay safe.

maybe you'll catch redbird but you'll need a bigger trap as she will be sitting in her car watching the smaller birds.

Pain is weakness leaving the body.

Obstacles are what we see when we take our eyes off the goal.

We had, probably, a couple dozen cardinals in the traps.  But I wouldn't swear in court that they weren't the same birds multiple times.  (Yeah, I know...you're not supposed to say "they all look the same to me." ;-) )

Did learn that Cardinals bite pretty hard and it's best to wear leather gloves when trying to remove them from the traps.  lol.   Several would stick their heads out one space between the wires, reach through the next space over and grab my finger and not let go.  Makes it a tad difficult to set them free.  There was one  that when my wife tried to get him out, stuck his head between the wires, reached back and latched ahold of his own foot.  (sigh...there's probably a sermon in there somewheres)

Notice it was the male doing the goofy things? Lol!!!!!

I've heard about the banding projects. Who do you contact to get involved? Are traps supplied, or do people supply their own, or both?

In our case it was easy.   The wildlife biologist was sharing an office with the Game Wardens and I simply walked in and asked if he needed a place to trap white wing doves.   (We had had 150 white wings on the front porch feeding area all at the same time.)

He supplied 3 2' X 2' wire traps.   (Only two of them were effective however, due to the area I had to put them.)  About once an hour the biologist and his helper would come around to check the traps and band any birds we'd captured.

You might check the Ohio Dept of Natural Resources website: www.dnr.state.oh.us

There might be banding program information or at least contact information.  :-)
