VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. -- A female corrections officer at the Tomoka Correctional Institution in Daytona Beach was raped and murdered by an inmate. The inmate accused of the attack was serving a life sentence for a similar crime.

Thursday morning, Channel 9 learned the victim is 50-year-old Donna Fitzgerald. Investigators weren't saying much about how the attack happened, but they did say it was a very troubling case.

The suspect, 39-year-old Enoch Hall, is serving two life sentences plus an additional 42 years for four other violent crimes including two previous counts of sexual battery, a kidnapping count and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was supposed to be guarded at the correctional institution under the second highest level of security. The highest level is reserved for inmates sentenced to death.

Fitzgerald had been with the Department of Corrections since 1995. Employees at the jail said it was the first time a corrections officer had been murdered at the institution.

A statement from the DOC was released early Thursday morning.

“Words cannot express the sorrow I feel over the loss of our Correctional Officer,” said Department of Corrections Secretary Walter McNeil. “The entire Department grieves the murder of one of our finest officers, and we pray for the victim’s family during this difficult time.”

Those B**tards, why in the hell and who in the hell allowed these two to be close proximity of each other.  The POS is a raping muderer, and he should have never been allowed to get in close proximity of the female officer. This is the second timeI heard of a female officer getting raped by an inmate, only the first survived. What is wrong with the personnel assigning woman to violent men.  And don't give me the scenario, your an officer, you should be able to handle anything.  There goes common sense out the window. This incident could have been totally avoidable.  There's some professional negligence going on here.  So sorry for you pain and suffering Officer Fitzgerald, please have  peace now, and your memory will not be forgotten.  May all involved in the tragic event pay for their sins (including staffing schedulers for this horrific incident).

I would like to sincerely apologize for incorrectly stating the C.O.'s name at the top of the thread.  Her name is Donna Fitzgerald.  RIP and prayers go out to her families...

It is one of the worst things that could possibly happen. There is a very big misconception on how inmates are delt with in Florida. It is not that well you are an officer. The institution I work at has some of the worst in mates in the system including ex death row.  We are short on staff all across the state and a large majority of the staff were I work are females. When you are in a quad full of imates about 56 of them it is you a radio, small can of oc and handcuffs.

Crayzb, It sounds like florida operates the same as Arizona does.  Its sad to hear that other states are in the same boat, (ie) radio, oc, handcuffs and understaffed.

God bless you and your family and all the other fellow brothers and sisters out there both inside the walls (and or wire) and outside.

Dont knock on Deaths door, Ring the bell and run like hell... He Hates that !
