How late do you stay up when you're not working?   Do you ever have nightmares?

I stay up depending on what I have in store for the next day. I am usually up early to spend time with my little girl. As for nightmares I could write award winning horror films.

Depends on what my schedule for the next day is. I could also write horror films as far as nightmares are concerned. Been that way since I was a kid. Haven't had any crazy one's lately, maybe tonight will be the night

Generally, I go to bed at 2100, but I'm awake at 0330. Except for those few times I work a night shift, or we are doing night canine training,  that is pretty much standard. As for nightmares, not any more.

I try to get to sleep within an hour or two after coming home from work (0630hrs.,) .  As for nightmares, they come and go depending on work.

OK since we're not giving her crap for another sensles question................

When I came back  from the desert I had nightmares every night for a month straight they dwindled down, and now they are random. Most times I wake up yelling at soldiers. Because there is nothing like being an active duty SSG and joining the nasty guard for a year and going to Iraq with a bunch of NG soldiers.

Nightmares went away about 10 years ago. The first few years all were the same; in a shootout with a gun that didn't work or dud bullets.

I have on occasion, especially if I'm off for the next several days, not gone to bed until the next night, just hard to unwind sometimes...

Yes, I've had a few nightmares from time to time too. But why do you ask all these questions?

How about next time when you ask a question that you answer it first then let everyone else, that wants to participate, give an answer.

I usually go to be after about 1-2 hrs after getting home from work.  I've had some nightmares about my first SIDS death of a 6 mo old and of a Domestic murder that I had responded to.

I stay up until the sun returns and I only have nightmares when I see, or think I see, one of my ex-wives.

My best nightmare is winning the lottery and finding out that my lawyer screwed up and my divorces were not real.

I think this thread is slightly interesting and enjoyed reading some of the feedback. I'd like to add a little further questioning if I could, to further understand.

I read a lot about the types of things LEOs go through, the types of scenes they come across and calls they have to deal with. Being a nonLEO I cannot understand what it is like for those of you who have to deal with it. I can only imagine how your job effects your psyche, so in regards to this post- Does your job effect your sleeping habits, and in which ways? Also, if you do have nightmares from the job, how do you handle it?

There is a concern definitely, PTSD is not reserved just for the military there are lots of police who suffer from it and never know it. Everytime we talk about PTSD we think of war and bombs etc...etc... but it can be as simple as seeing your first body or dead child at an accident scene. Of course police have fire fights too. So there is really a concern there but this person who poted has just worn out her welcome a bit. I'm not even sure she's a real person I suspect she is a bot.

I know what you mean by the poster of this thread KSP, I could tell by your responses:) However there can be educational value found for aspiring officers and people who genuinely want to understand the LEO world so I tried to turn this thread into something useful and ignore the posters idiocy. Now I know being a nonLEO I cannot post in this thread without actually seeking clarification so let me get to my next question...Could someone elaborate on PTSD? Not just the medical definition, but what PTSD means to you, your fellow officer, and your family. My line of thinking is that it is something that effects not only the one who has it, but those around them (correct me if I am wrong) and I'd just like to know how it effects a LEOs life as a whole. Thank you for you time, and thank you all for your service! You put up with a lot and recieve too little in return.

I try to go to bed at a decent time whenever I can, but sometimes that is hard to do.  I think we all have nightmares every now and then..........

I always had the nightmare that I was in a gun battle and when my bullets left the gun they just dropped out of the barrel and when they did stirke the perp it just embedded in the layer of skin at the forehead.

Glad to know that it's not just me then.  I've had dreams where the trigger was too hard to pull or the bullets came out in slow motion and fell to the ground like in a cartoon.  And then there is when you see the bullets hitting them but there are no holes and they don't stop coming at ya.

And I go to sleep when the meds kick in and my brain finally shuts down or slows to under 100 mph.
