Posted 3 months ago Does anyone carry an M14 socom on duty or know of a department that lets there officers carry one. Or do you think the rifle should not be used? "THE BRAVE MIGHT DIE, BUT THE FEAR WILL NEVER LIVE". -UKN- |

Posted 3 months ago The M-14 is a good patrol rifle. I think the SOCOM version is a better version for a patrol car due to overall length is shorter. I personally know of one former coworker who was issued a select-fire M-14 from Vietnam as a patrol rifle years ago for Pershing County S.O. He said he liked it but it was nearly impossible to control in full-auto.

Posted 3 months ago I would be concerned with overpenetration. Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil.

Posted 3 months ago Good rifle for rural applications (in particular) and for barrier penetration and vehicle-to-vehicle engagements. Should be GTG with Hornady TAP rounds. As for over-penetration, I would also rather go with 5.56mm or 6.8SPC for (most) urban scenarios.

Posted 11 days ago The SOCOM 2 is an excellent weapon. I myself just purchased one a few days ago. As a far as over penetration I am no where nearly as worried about it as any full sized M14/M1A due to the short barrel (16 1/4") the average round loses about 350fps. The rail system is great not just for adding your equip. but, it also adds a little weight to the nose of the rifle giving it very good balance. As far as the new muzzle break on it it is designed to actually pull the rifle forward a bit when fired to reduce recoil and, aid in picking up additional targets. As far as LE departments I dont know. Many of us are trying to get it as the primary carry for Long Range Marksman and, true snipers while on dismounted patrol instead of having to carry the m4 and, its ammo.

Posted 3 days ago When my department got M-16A1s from the 10-33 program we also got four M-14s. We had an armorer put 18" bbls on two of them and one of them is scoped. I have one of the short ones and it has the full auto selector lever. Great fun once in a while but of no practical value. We use Hornady 168gr. BTHP TAP ammunition in them. They are not for every situation but when you need to reach out and touch someone or defeat a body armor clad maggot it is ready to go.
