Future in Criminology????
Posted 3 months ago I am currently attending college for my associate's in criminal justice. However, I do not relish the idea of being on the streets, and carrying a gun. I do prefer to get into Theory Construction or Sociology of Law. After I get my associate's degree where should I go from there? Although I do support LEO's; I do not see myself becoming one. I could really use some feedback on what my next course of action should be. Thank you. |

| Posted 3 months ago You could become a teacher I suppose but probably not with an Associates. I suspect your options will be limited if you do not want to be an LEO. Get your BA or masters and go be a teacher. Police Link Forums Moderator PAIN IS WEAKNESS LEAVING THE BODY! |

| Posted 3 months ago I am planning on continuing with school to get my bachelor's degree, but I do NOT want to be a teacher. I still want a career in the field of criminology. |

| Posted 3 months ago There's always consulting. I'd say work for the FBI, but I'm sure you'd have to carry a firearm. You could to business consulting based on protective/criminology subjects. There are many options, some agents like profiler for the FBI aren't required to hold a firearm, buut they rrquire a bachalors at minimum. All I can say is research, research, research. Hi Tsnyder, you ever thought about forensic psychology, or just behavior science? You can probably used that to interview and study criminals or become a profiler for the Feds. You going to just have to do more research in that area, and see if you can get a job in that field wthout having to go through basic training and start off as a law enforcement officer first. I'm sure there are avenues you can take without going through basic training, maybe one of the LEO's can shed some light in that area. |

You could always try social work, or as KSP said try and get a job teaching the field to others. Or try abnormal psychology as a career. |

| Posted 2 months ago I have been considering forensic psychology or profiling. I do believe profilers don't have to carry firearms; which would suit me just fine. Thanks for the responses everyone, they have helped to open my options! |

| Posted 2 months ago You could look into being a criminalist or a lab technician for a local PD or a state agency (ours is the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation). The OSBI does the DNA, fingerprint analysis, drug & alcohol analysis, etc. for all of the state agencies and many local and county agencies. Only the big two (OKC and Tulsa) have their own crime labs, I believe. I think the criminalists are sworn and carry weapons, but I'm not sure. I don't believe the lab techs are sworn, though. Both require a bachelors' degree here. Social work is NOTHING like police work, other than an investigation is an investigation on a basic level. Social work involves a LOT of hand-holding and if you don't like that kind of stuff, stay away from it. (Just friendly advice from a NON-hand-holder.) |

| Posted 2 months ago Or, you could just change your major. It seems obvious that you are not satisfied with the avenue that the major you presenty are pursueing will take you. So, change your major now, problem solved. |

Well isn't that just a negative remark. I didn't say that I wasn't satisfied with the avenue my major is taking me down; i'll I am asking about is what are ALL of my options to go with my associate's and bachelor's degree when I get it. I understand the importance of LEO's, but maybe that position isn't for everyone who wants to still be involved with this type of profession. Maybe not everyone has to be an LEO to be able to contribute to the enforcement of the law, and crackdown on criminals. Did you ever think of that????? |

| Posted 2 months ago My degrees are in Criminal Justice and Psychology...I went to work helping with youth programs, now I am an online investigator. I started as University Police and then Corporal of a Prison in Central Control Office, but the uniform wasn't for me and after I got married I decided to pursue other options. I protect you online when you don't know how. The best advice I can give you, is never give your personal information out to anyone online, and always protect your children while they are online. Don't under est. their ability of trust. Shan |

I think that it's very wise for you to realize now that doing the "badge & gun" route is NOT for you...Social services sounds more like the path you'd like, or maybe other analyst type positions...support functions are also important.... I'm not "really" a troll....I just love changing my avatar... because...

No, i'm not expecting everyone to tell me what I want to hear. I have been looking for suggestions of other options within this type of field where I would not have to carry a firearm. That doesn't seem unreasonable to be able to be within the field without having to carry. |

That has actually been what I have been thinking of gravitating towards. It is in my nature to help other people, and I like getting to the nitty gritty of the how and why aspects of behavior, and how to aid in further prevention of that behavior. So, i've been thinking that maybe my best option from here would be to go for my bachelor's degree in psychology, or sociology. |

| Posted 2 months ago THERE ARE OTHER ALTERNATIVES TO BECOMING A FOOT SOLDIER. HOWEVER, I DO RECOMMENT THAT YOU DO GET YOUR GUN PERMIT AND INROLL INTO A GOOD SHOOTING GALLERY WHERE YOU COULD PRACTICE IN BECOME A SKILLED. MOST JOBS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT REQUIRE ONE TO BE ABLE TO SHOOT..........AFTER ALL THE "BASES" OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AT ANY LEVEL IS TO BE QUAILIFIED TO PROTECT AND SERVE---EVEN FOR YOUR SELF. YOU COULD RESEACH POSITONS THAT WOULD PLACE YOU AT AN ADMINISTRATIVE LEVEL (MOSTLY OFFICE DUTY). BUT PLEASE DO TAKE MY ADVICE TO ACT ON YOUR WEAPON CARRYING PRIVELAGES.............THE JOB YOU GET MAY NOT REQUIRED IT BUT WHEN WORKING IN LAW ENFORCEMENT AT "ANY" LEVEL, CONFINE YOUR SELF TO BE PREPARED. CRIME AND TERRORISM CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE ANYTIME. AS A FEMALE...DON'T BE CAUGHT SLIPP'N GIRL. I HAVE A GUN PERMIT BUT RIGHT NOW I'M ONLY CARRYING A HIGH POWED BBGUN........HOWEVER, WITH THE RIGHT TYPE OF BB PELLTS AND A GOOD AIM AT LEAST I'M NOT AS OPEN TO HARM AS I USE TO BE. I AM A SINGLE MOTHER WHO HAS TO VERY OFTEN COME HOME IN THE DARK WITH MY BABIES AFTER WORK. |

| Posted 2 months ago You could also consider working inside an adult or juvenile prison/facility as a psychologist, juvenile justice specialist, social worker, etc. I don't know of a single facility where you can carry a firearm while in direct contact with the inmates/clients. I worked inside a multi-security level prison for several years and it wasn't bad at all, really. I also investigate out a the maximum-security juvenile facility here and it's not bad, either. There are lots of "inside" jobs that wouldn't even necessarily require a degree, such as records officer, etc. |

Right now I wish I could trade places with a friend of mine. She is working in the office of the local prison, but only took it because it was an office job. I'd like it because it would be a way to get into a position, and then move up when I got my degree. She is definitely not interested in a criminal justice career. I think i'm actually jealous of her, because i'd love to be in her spot right now, especially with only having 6.5 mos left before I have my first degree. I was thinking about applying for her position when she decides to leave, since that is the path she is choosing... |

| Posted 2 months ago You should have her keep you in the loop about upcoming job openings. I never really wanted to be a correctional officer, but it was the first job in the field that I found. I also learned a lot and really enjoyed it. I did move up quickly, but have always remembered where I came from, so to speak. |
I will definitely be doing more research. I have also recently started considering some type of work with children. I'm assuming psychology would probably be the best choice for bachelor's programs. Thanks everyone! I'm still open to any suggestions or advise anyone can give me on this subject.
