Cops on Steroids

Posted about 1 month ago There was an article this month in Men's Health about cops taking steroids. Cops say they need it because of the criminals they have to fight, tests for steroids are $100 a pop and many precincts do not have that kind of money to pay for constant testing. What's everyone's opinion on whether cops should take steroids to protect themselves or should they be tested. Besides being illegal, there weren't many arguments against cops taking steroids, anyone have any? |

| Posted about 1 month ago I started in 1959 and there were very few "big" cops in my department. there were some fat ones and tall ones but none except for one that I remember, that looked like "Mr Olympia" Now days, In my old department and even in the small ones around the countryside where I now live, most of the young cops, even the short guys, are all muscled up. I have no evidence or information that steroids are responsible, but it seems pretty unlikely that young men in these times of little physical labor and the scourge of TV and computer games which lead to early obesity, are somehow naturally becoming more muscular. I do know that my old department now has a fitness room that would put "Fitness America" to shame, something that we could not have even dreamed of. I was a former amateur boxer and came to my department directly from the paratroops when I was 24 years of age. I never looked like these young cops of today, of course maybe it was just growing up during the depression years when nutritious food was at a premium. I do believe that steroid use causes undue aggression. I had my ass beat enough times to make me wish that I was bigger and more formidable looking but then again, I am still here and in excellent health. Huge muscles do not win a battle, a strong mind and willpower do. Tact and the ability to communicate in most cases lead the way.
Aside from the endless cycle and inevitable addiction to “having to keep the pump” steroids are illegal unless prescribed for specific medical conditions; which would in most cases preclude typical cops from continuing to work the streets while undergoing treatment.
As already cited, more and more departments are investing in fitness centers and some are paying Cops to hit the gym, not to turn into muscle bound freaks but to build endurance and overall strength.
There will always be members of society and our profession who choose to take shortcuts, and they will realize the consequences down the road.
Along the line of criminality, as noted, steroids are in most cases illegal, when they are had, it is via the Black Market; you open the door to dealing with nefarious characters who are likely breaking other drug laws, among other things. The only time a Cop should be dealing with these types of folks is in the course of arresting them.
The cost factor to screen for elevated hormone levels should not preclude a department from testing, while at the same tie the appearance of an officer should not be the sole reason for testing. Start by reinforcing ethics and accountability, from the top down. And the cost to test pales in comparison to the money paid out for civil liability, injuries to officers and medical issues down the road.
What it bois down to is that as Cops, we need to abide by all the laws, not just the ones we fancy or those that we choose to ignore for our own benefit after construing some justification.

| Posted about 1 month ago Technique works over strength the majority of the time and beings steriods are illegal, I don't guess it's a good idea............By the way the weapon on your side, the taser or OC should handle most problems. |

| Posted about 1 month ago They are illegal...no question or argument...they are illegal so a cop can't take them. I can handle anything that life throws at me~ I may not be able to handle it well, or correctly, gracefully, with finesse, or expediently ~ But I will handle it. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Well lets see....considering Steroids can cause serious mood swings it's probably not the best idea in a line of work where you deal with people who don't like you ALL DAY. Secondly, if you need steroids, its just because your to lazy to go work out, try the legal way for once, it works I swear I've seen it happen. And last, you don't have to be big to fight with people, you only need to know how to fight, and utilize the weapons given to you. Oh, and of course THEY'RE ILLEGAL, what other reason do you need? Cops don't aren't an exception to the law, we enforce it... "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody. " |

| Posted about 1 month ago A few officer I know over 35 have been given hormone replacement therapy, which is testosterone, they wear either as a patch or gel that improves many things for men like muscle growth, memory, and of course improved sex life, I have seen it work, and the ones that use it legally say it is much like turning back time because of the benefits they didn't know they would receive. Taking "roids" just for the sake of getting your swoll on is 1 illegal, and 2 unnecessary, as there are pleanty of good legal supplements on the market that will give an officer a boost when he/she has reached a plateau in the gym, B.T.D.T. |

I don't know any working cops that take steriods... But who are you, and more importantly, why do you ask? All thats is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I'm not the bigget guy around, but people including fellow Officers have asked or accussed me of takng "roids". Its kinda of irratating because I think the biggest pussies in the world are the ones that take steroids. I would gladly tell anyone that uses them this to there face, (and I have before on more than one occassion, including fellow Officers). First it's illegal, second-along with the mood swings/aggressivness it is now linked to degenative heart disease, diabetese, testicular cancer. All these things can be pased on genetically to your offspring and then their offspring and so-on. So just because you wanted to get another 100pnds or so up on the bench press you now screwed about 4 generations of your family. Guys that use them are just pathetic. I agree with GANGMAN, it doesn't matter how big you are Technique will win a fight every time. Any Officer that takes them I hope gets busted, because they're obviosely to self conscious. Remember this- it doesn't matter how big or strong you are, there is always someone that can kick your ass. | Posted about 1 month ago As a former Patrol Officer and Correctional Peace Officer and now riding a desk and gaining a large sum of weight, I can see the draw to short cuts like steroids. But like I tell the new kids, I may be old and fat but I have forgotten more about fighting than they have learned technique is everything. Learn it, practice it every day till you don't have to think about it. IN 7 years I have not had a single use of force - because I talk them down and I don't give them a chance to get violent. Brains and skill is more important than BRAWN. I didn't do it, nobody saw me, can't prove nothin' |

| Posted about 1 month ago I'm with Tick! Who are you and why are you asking us if we think its ok for a cop to break the law? What's the real purpose of your question? PS- My future is so bright i gotta wear sunglasses.
The correct phrase is "My future's so bright I gotta wear shades! Dork!

| Posted about 1 month ago If you saw me in person you would realize that steroids are not the answer......only a miracle will help! New York City PD is now testing for steroid due to a major bust some time ago and those cops are getting jammed up big time. Being a Tyrant does not make one a Leader! |

| Posted about 1 month ago They are illegal, to enforce the law you must do first by example. If they were legal and/or prescribed and under Doctor supervision I may research the issue. Otherwise using steroids is no different then using any other kind of illegal drug. KSP494

| Posted about 1 month ago I don't believe that we need to take steroids to do our job, that is just an excuse. I work out a lot though I am not as big as when I was in the military, yet I still have just as much confidence if I were to come upon a steroid poppin freak. That is why we have 1) radios to call for back-up, 2) force continuem (sp), 3) tazers/weapons. No matter how bad you are at fighting if you come upon a steroid freak and he clearly wants trouble, use common sense we are justified as long as we do what is right. I'm not going to fight a small/skinny guy if I don't have to...mace or tase that a**! |

If you DID decide to take steroids not only would you be breaking the law but you would be an idiot//

| Posted about 1 month ago Man are they starting the roids again...My dept went through that God like 19 yrs ago...We had two commit suicide due to roid rage...One that got off of them but started having heart attacks in his 40s. One guy broke a bone every time he hit someone...These are soooo dangerous...You can bulk up the natural way and lift weights...The average street creep isn't in that great a shape....Pls don't tell me this is the rage again. Our dept used to check roids with the drug tests... |

| Posted about 1 month ago Roids make you bigger, they don't make you stronger, tougher or smarter. The way I look at it is the bigger they, the harder I'm gonna hit them and of course the harder they will fall. Same holds true with us, Roids won't make any of us better officers plus they are illegal and they are very dangerous. Besides as Georgie_Cop can tell you, they give you a little winkie!!! To Ina_pickle..... WTF is that??? Normally I would quote it but I don't think it's fair to subject anyone to that picture you posted again. Looks the Michelin Man Float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade broke free from his tethers and got himself all lubed up for a night at the Blue Oyster Bar!!! Police work- the greatest show on earth and my team always wins!!!

| Posted about 1 month ago Here is a little something on steroids: How they work: They allow muscles to have an enviroment that's conducive to growth by allowing the body to absorb more of the nutrients required for muscle repair. Coupled with resistance training, and gradually increasing small dosage amounts of the choice "prescription" will do wonders. How to abuse: Take too much, too soon and have a cocky attitude about it. Tell everyone you're on the "juice". As a note, most people do not know you're on steroids until you tell them or show them. Otherwise, there will be no change in your attitude. If anything, you will be a little more calm because of your newfound abilities and nonwillingness to harm the public. What to avoid as an LEO: Testosterone Suspension Should LEOs take steroids? I think the answer is no only because it would be very difficult to monitor and regulate. There are also too many BGs (bad guys) out there who would take a look at the Officer and when they get placed into custody, complain about the Officer having been too rough. Unless there is a camera or a credible witness around, it will be hard to prove, but the lawsuits and overturned cases will fly off the bench like the proverbial hotcake. Dangerous ground. |
