I just saw something interesting on the NBC World News after a story about John McCain speaking to an NAACP convention.  McCain stated to the crowd that even if they don't support him in the election he would still like their input and guidence.  He then fielded an open forum for the attendees to ask questions without previous plans to do so which was interesting.

At any rate the reason for this thread is after McCain spoke NBC announced that there was a recent poll asking Americans about current race relations in todays society.  It was a general type poll on whether the participants thought race relations were "generally good or bad" in today's society and the results were as follows:

The results were something close to the following (didn't write down the exact #'s and the kids distracted me):  whites stated they felt race relations were generally 55% good and only like 29% bad,  while blacks answered almost the total opposite stating they felt race relations were something like  55% bad and only 29% good.  Not sure where the other 16% on each side fell but this was the reults.

I was just wondering what everyone's feelings here are about this.  I was kinda surprised at such a wide margin of difference.  I figured it would be different but not by that much.

Anyone have any input on this and please be respectful, this is not meant to be a fighting thread just seeing what everyone else thinks.

You are a troublemaker!  Just kidding.  Seriously, I saw this topic, wanted to reply and then noticed you started it!  I saw the coverage of the NAACP conference with McCain speaking, and the news reported that 90% of black voters support Obama.  I think that's a really sad statement if it's true.  To me, that's voting with color no matter what the issues are.  I shouldn't vote for McCain because of the fact that we are the same color, and I shouldn't NOT vote for Obama because he doesn't have the same skin color as me.  That report really depressed me.

I think that race relations are deteriorating in this country:  maybe it's because I'm older and less idealistic, but I felt better about us "all being able to get along" when I was younger.  Don't know if it's my age or the times changing?   We will know that race relations are better for sure when all voters vote based on issues, not skin color.

I really want to give an opinion here but I don't dare. I will say I was raised in an area where racism and discrimination was something I learned about in school we didn't actually see it. Unfortunately some of these southern states still have good and bad issues on both sides of the equation. You have white folks who work hard and get what they want in life then you have white folks who are too damn lazy to do anything with themselves and find it easier to blame someone else then take responsibility. Then you have black folks who work hard for what they want because they have good upbringing, and then you have black folks who don't think they have to work for anything, they think they are entitled because their skin is brown.

I can say I saw a bunch of race problems growing up in the south. I think the overt racism is better but my minority friends say the subtle racism is very rampant.

The thing that drives me nuts is ANYONE who thinks society owes them anything.

Affirmative action does more to fuel the fire. Nobody likes to hear that they didn't get selected. Oh they were among the top scores but someone below them got the spot instead because a % had to be met. I'm all for equal rights and equal opportunity but affirmative action is special rights and discriminatory to someone else who made the standard.

I don't see color, I only see people. unfortunately all colors have their problems and things do not seem to get any better. I was raised in the old days and my folks brought me up to be color blind and  even though I was a policeman on the line stations with the District of Columbia and I also brought up my kids the same way. I know that color is a problem with both blacks and whites and will probably always be but we have to try .
