Secondary/Off-duty sidearm choice
Posted 4 months ago Just curious on other LEO's takes on their personal choice for secondary/off-duty weapon. I've been carrying my .380-cal Colt Mustang Plus stainless for back-up/off-duty since my rookie days in the mid-90's, but I am currently poised to purchase an H&K P2000SK .40-cal. Not only is it just as small & concealable, I won't have to purchase the .380 rounds for personal rangetime and for off-duty quals (as we carry Glock .40's as our primary....doesn't seem like a big deal, but some ammo's getting quite expensive lately - don't even mention the jump in cost for .223 rifle rounds..) I've done some research, and the P2000SK seems to be one of the most highly regarded and RELIABLE compacts on the market. Just wondering if there are some choices out there that I haven't yet considered, and what reasons people give for their selection. Thanks for the input, it IS appreciated..especially if I am overlooking another worthy .40-cal model before dropping some big $$ on H&K |

| Posted 4 months ago I carry the glock 27 off duty. It.s a good .40 when it comes to shooting. But I must admit it poses some challenges because of it's size. If I could do it all over I would look seriously at the Kahr (spelling?) or the Kal-Tec. I have a Kal-Tec in 9mm That is very concealable. But I haven't had enough range time with it yet to know if It will replace my G27 as my carry gun. I reject your reality and submit my own. |

| Posted 4 months ago It seems all of the "Baby Glocks" are just as reliable as their fullsize counterparts, but - I have to agree with you on this one - they are too bulky to be that concealable, esp in summertime. A friend of mine who went through the Academy with me worked for an agency that carries Glock .45's and required (not sure if it's still in their policy now or not) their officers to only carry the same caliber for secondary/off-duty. His Baby Glock was fun to shoot, but it presented some real concealment challenges. |

| Posted 4 months ago I have a KAHR K40 that uses a single stack mag. It is more concealable than my Glock 27. I got it in stainless before they came out with all the "PLASTIC" guns. In Polymer it would be very light and very concealable. So if you don't spend a lot of time in high crime areas, go for it. When I started in LE I had to live in the city sharing an apartment with other cops. When I left my apartment, I needed all the firepower I could carry. Concealment was secondary to me back then. Fact is, we had to carry our issued 4 inch colt. Speed loaders werent even available yet. In retirement its a whole different situation. On duty a second smaller weapon (.380) would do. But if I was carrying only one weapon, I would upgrade to the Glock 27 .40 with its larger capacity magazine. You will find carrying extra mags just doesnt happen most of the time so a double stacker with its high capacity is a good choice. |

| Posted 4 months ago I've noticed throughout my career, when most of the Old School colleagues still refer to the Good 'ol days when the .357 or .38-cal six-shooter was "All the Trust You Needed," but you are right - higher capacity and the ability for expeditious replenishment of rounds is a matter of necessity (unfortunately) on today's streets, so a semi-auto in higher caliber is a no-brainer. I'm about 95% sold on the H&K, but regardless if I finalize that decision, whatever replacement I make for my secondary/off-duty piece is going to be .40-cal, definitely.. (Not to say I don't love my Colt and Husqvarna .380's, they are just better suited for that extra fun on the range rather than carry.)

The baby Glock is the most reliable of the bunch. They do perform just like the full size models. My experience with others has not been good especially the Kahr, it jammed frequently and only liked certain ammunition. When we qualified at the range with our backup weapons I saw several officers on the line having problems. The one officer who had a baby Glock shot a perfect score and had no malfunctions or issues at all. Some of you may have had different experiences with the Kahr and others but if it were me, I would stick to what we all know is going to go bang every time and that's the Glock. My 2 cents...................... WHO'S IN CHARGE OF THIS MESS??? |

| Posted 4 months ago I carry the S&W M&P .40 Compact as a backup and off duty. Similar in size to the "baby Glocks" and can use the M&P full size magazines that I carry for my duty weapon. |

| Posted 4 months ago I read an article about some early KAHR's having a jamming problem. But, I have never had a misfire or jam with my stainless K40. I bought a Glock 27 model in Polymer to gain the extra capacity and still have similar weight. I read many stories of Glock Kabooms! That is how they titled the stories of their blowing up! I have never had a misfire or jam with my Glock either. I would venture to say that every make can have some bad times. Whether they catch it in time and fix the problem or come up with the reason behind it; is what is most important. Just as with the ammo change in Viet Nam causing most of the trouble with the M16, the Glock KB trouble was said to be ammo related They did not change the specs of Glocks which to some extent have unsupported chambers. I believe they said it had to do with higher pressure ammo sometimes being used and certain brands of ammo. Federal for instance changed their cartridge, adding support to the cartridge ring. The point is that both KAHR and GLOCK have corrected the problems or advised how to avoid them and both are reliable weapons. It is difficult at times to sort out what column writers are being paid to put forth one gun over another thus it took a lot of reading to get to the truth behind the Kaboom stories relating to Glocks as well as jamming of early KAHR's. I think Glock's current reputation is proof that the Kboom problem was ammo related and I feel the KAHR 40 is equally trustworthy. |

| Posted 4 months ago I carry a 38 Smith and Wesson Airweight revolver. I love it and never have had any problems with it. Usually carry it on my ankle. |

| Posted 4 months ago not much choice here, it either has to be a G 35 or a G 27, I usually go with the G 27 because it is compact. Pain is weakness leaving the body. Obstacles are what we see when we take our eyes off the goal. |

| Posted 4 months ago Glock 27, el cheapo Rossi 5-shot in .38 Spl. and a P3AT in .380 on a belt clip, in that order. The G27 the vast majority of the time. If I had it to do over I would go with the G26 in 9mm. |

| Posted 4 months ago Since I retired I only keep two guns. My 380 Walther PPK/S which is locked away and my Glock model 30 compact 45. That is the only one I ever use. There is no need for any other. Being a Tyrant does not make one a Leader! |

| Posted 4 months ago Okay I am a rookie preaching to the preacher - I carried a glock 36 which is a .45acp single stack 6 in the mag 1 in the pipe semi-auto. I love it! It's larger than the model 27 in length of grip but it's about half a thick. I carried mine on a ankle holster on duty and holster-less in plain clothies in the small of my back. My duty weapon at the time was a glock 22 and I shot a 97 day 99 night with it, were as I shot a 98 day 100 night with my glock 36. I love that weapon. If your looking a good deal check out Arrington's Police Supply, they sell weapons to fire, rescue and law at or nere their cost. Their number is (336) 333-9019, and they will ship to your department. Be safe and take care for you only have 1* - B6VA4 |

| Posted 4 months ago here in Texas we're proud to have a gun on us. I carry a S&W 686 357 stainless or my Beretta 92FS stainless( Lots of salt in the air along the Texas Gulf Coast) why big metal guns? polymer, plastic or however you want to call it, take the poly-plastic frame hold it with both hands, place your thumbs in the middle and bend. You can flex these guns with minimal ease! Not a fan of that! Guns have been metal since day 1 why change a perfect formula???? While you sleep soundly at night I risk my life to make sure to make sure you never wake! |

Although I've shot plenty of practice rounds through my brother's PPK/S when we hit the range together, and even though he swears by it all the time, it always felt like a smaller version of the S&W stainless .40's we used to carry at my agency (before we transitioned to the Glock 22.) I'm not saying it's not reliable, but I definitely am keeping with the .40-cal market. Reliability is a major selling point, and 98% of all the critiques I've read on the P2000SK all stressed that over and over. |

I'm really wary of S&W semiautos since the early 90's: my senior year of college, I interned with a small agency near the University which had several officers jump on the bandwagon of the "Next Big Thing" - the SIGMA...I saw it firsthand on the range, the stovepipes and misfeeds, even saw one officer with a misfire/live catrige ejected(!) Nearly every officer there with his shiny brand new SIGMA out of the box was swearing under his breath and promising he WOULD be getting his $$ back from the S&W rep who had sold them the weapon. Now, I would never give up my S&W .44-mag ss revolver, and a teammate on my squad has a new MMP .223 rifle on order (which I'm eager to check out, though I'd never give up my DPMS, either)....so I'm sure there are some S&W semiautos out there that are reliable, but I just got a bad taste for them when I had to carry one after switching to my current agency back in '99 (while they were in the midst of transition to Glock 22) and I did NOT like it in the least. Add that to my observations 5 yrs before that during the senior internship, and you can see why I hold reservations (..but always an open mind...er, as best I can, LOL) |

| Posted 4 months ago Glock 27. Never have had any problems carrying off duty, very reliable and like being able to carry it as a backup and use the mags from my 22 if needed. The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.

| Posted 3 months ago I got an email from H&K rep's on their website, advising me to send all pertinent contact info to their LE sales department for a proper quote. I did this because I heard they give a nice discount to sworn personnel when you order straight from them. The lowest I found so far for the P2000SK was around $875, so hopefully I can get an H&K quote about %10 lower than that, at the least. |
