Wow, I thought they were cool with it.  I am in the process to become an honored member of Law Enforcement (Customs and Border Patrol Agent) and I am 4 months into the process.  But today I am asked why I divulged that info to them because "normally we fire people looking for another job".  I am currently working in construction as a highly trained technician doing Specialized Fire Suppression.  People that have my quals are not "dime a dozen".

I hope I don't need to go to a defensive mode, but I don't want to lose my current job, because nothing is for sure yet and it could be a while before I hear "report to your station to complete paperwork and report to the Academy for training on this date".  I continue to work as hard as I can, and I don't have any kind of short-timer's condition.  Heck, I just completed a 32hr work day on an "emergency" job.

My spidey-sense is starting to tingle.

Any advice?

We have the same thing, we can be terminted or lose retirement benefits for negotiating for another job while we are currently employed.

Tell them if they screw with you, once you get in you will call your brothers in INS and have the illegal labor they employee deported and report them to the IRS, Dept of Labor and Dept. of Homeland Security for violating all kinds of  federal laws.  If you can collect worker's comp, throw yourself down a flight of steps and go out injured for a bit too just out of principal.....LOL.

Seriously, tell them you were just trying to be honest with them and that it was something you are just exploring.  Tell them you weren't actually actively looking for other employment, you just wanted to explore that field and see where it went.  remind them that most employees would keep it a secret until the last minute but that you have more loyalty to them than that and that's why you wanted them to know so they wouldn't be shocked if they got a phone call about you from Border Patrol Background Checkers.  If they still don't respect that and give you sh*t then......THROW YOURSELF DOWN THOSE STEPS LIKE I TOLD YOU AND ENJOY THE SUMMER OFF ON THEM!!!!

The only reason I divulged the info, was because I knew there would be a visit by Homeland Security for reference check on my BI.  I didn't want anyone to be surprised.

Sounds like I am in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't situation".  This could really suck, if I get fired for this.  AZMeanGreen, or other CBP  agents, can you help?  Not "special help" but maybe a good word in the right place?  I know, I'm asking too much, you don't know me.  But it never hurts to ask.

This kind of worries me. My employer found out the other day I'm interviewing for the Baltimore city PD. I'm wondering if they'll put me to the chopping block because they know I'm attempting to join the police department.

See, Doc, if you were a nurse you could tell 'em to go screw while you have your cake and eat it, too.  LOL

Just kidding.  Do what Chimp says.

No matter what, you were honest and they can't take that from either of you.  If they do keep giving you a hard time just ask them flat out, "Would you have rather I lie or hide it from you?" and see how that leaves them speechless.  If they were to fire you, and I highly doubt it, but if they do at least you can tell your soon to be employers that you were honest just like you would be with them because it's the right thing to do.  It will definitely make you look good to them as a potential candidate for employment.  Good luck to both of you, hope it works out.

LOL!  Bridgette, just reminds me of a plaque I made for a friend who graduated Nursing School:  When the going gets tough, the tough get screwed.  Had a 50cc syringe and a intracardiac needle I twisted into a corkscrew shape on it.

Thanks for the encouragement Chimp!  I am kind of needing it right now, with my unknown employment future.

Keep an eye out for someone on the roadside with a "I applied to LE and got fired from my current job.  Please help" sign.  LOL

When I was in that position I just let management assume the investigators were doing an update for DoD stuff.  It worked.

Regardless, it's pretty "chicken poop" to have such a policy, whether official or not.  I've never had an employer not back me up or fail to encourage me when I was looking for better work.  I always felt bad for leaving.

We are not allowed to negotiate another job, if they find out it could affect your employment, if you're retiring it could effect your retirement. If you're looking for work you have to do it privately and once you leave there is nothing they can do if you're not retired.

My employer found out the other day that my vacation time in August is being used to go to Baltimore city for my interview other stuff for their police force. All this talk has me worried about if my underhanded employer would do something of the same.

That's another thing, all of my time used for the process has been vacation days (days I have earned off) and they are starting to give me the stink-eye for that as well.  I usually know at least 2-3 weeks in advance if I need the day off and put in for it as soon as I know.

The BI investigator has had to reschedule me for a follow-up interview because work has sent me out of town when I wanted a day off.  Coincidence? Maybe, but .....

Doc,

Let your BI Investigator know what's happening, so if you do get fired, it hopefully wont affect your shot at CBP....and if you do get fired, the PRESS might be interested in knowing that you got fired for trying to become a public servant.

As to that lil' 32hr work "emergency", Unless you're employed by a governmental agency involved in public safety, that won't fly and the US & State Labor and OSHA/Safety boards might wanna know about that....

Best of luck to ya..

I volunteered for it, as I knew I was the only one that could do it (time and knowledge of the particular system).  They paid me appropriately, so that is not a concern.  I guess I was using that as an example of my willingness/loyalty to go the extra mile for my employer, whoever they are.

I hate when people question my integrity like work has done.
