P.D. vs Sheriff's Department

Posted 4 months ago Let me start by saying im not trying to start anything here, but that i'm just curious. Is there a known rivalry between Police and Sheriff? I was in the local gear and uniform shop buying some boots when a guy from pd asked if i was going into the academy. i said yeah and the lady at the desk tells him that i'm with the sheriff's department. He says "I cant say anything about that as long as they pick up the perps i dont want". so now, was he just rude, or is this an ongoing thing? i have nothing against P.D. and i would hate to have to dislike them because of my department. |

| Posted 4 months ago I smell rooky meat. sniff sniff oh good it's not me this time. Good luck in the academy brother. There is sort of a good natured thing going on here between all 6 major agencies in my area. It's all in fun. I reject your reality and submit my own. |

| Posted 4 months ago we all hate each other! throw int he state troopers and we have so many drive by's its crazy. some call them uniforms, we call them our colors! gangs aint got nothin on the police! i mean deputy's! i mean troopers! your profile says that your a corrections officer. most corrections officers work for county jails around here which cater to federal, state, county, and local law enforcement agencies. assuming this that would make you familiar with all of those agencies. do you see any rivalry's between any of those departments? However, nothing wrong with joking around. :) |

You don't have to worry about it. They won't be able to unravel the bureaucratic red tape fast enough to get to you. First, they'd have to analyze the situation. Then they'd have to wait for the results from the lab. Then they'd have to bring in a specialist for consulting Once they've done all that, they'd have to weigh the situation to see if it warrants scuffing their shoes or wrinkling their jacket. By then the real police have shown up, kicked ass, taken names and been forced by the Special Agent in Charge to turn over all information so they get the credit for the arrest.
I'm just saying... Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear - not absence of fear. |

It was the same way in southern AZ. The SO and TPD, especially, were always at each other's throats (figuratively). Professional courtesy is ever present though, usually! Dumb people are scary, and dumb people that think they are smarter than everyone else are even scarier!!-Me

| Posted 4 months ago That's all it is - an unspoken, friendly rivalry (and probably just due to the perceived pay differences, for the most part..) The main rivalry that existed before in our area had existed (as perceived by the foot soldiers, at least) between our sheriff and the previous chief of the main city's PD in our jurisdiction. But now that that chief is gone, there has been more cooperation from the leadership of the city PD (as far as I can tell.) When it comes down to the streets and working cases, though, we are ALL in it together. Pertaining to the comments of your fellow Academy-goer: don't let things get to you so easily; if you don't develop a sense of humor, your job will consume you (..just look at the suicide rate of LEO's compared to other professions..) Enjoy the comradery, and share the wealth when it comes to picking and prodding, Rookie! |

Let me say this, Police and Sheriff.....is an oxymoron......two words that have the same meaning. Police, Sheriff, Deputy, Trooper, all equal one thing.....Law Enforcement. There's going to be mostly friendly jousting, some maybe not so friendly because each agency has a few Maco Men in it. Thing is, if the clerk had said something to you, that officer would have been on their back before you could have blinked. Support bacteria. They're the only culture some people have. |

| Posted 4 months ago It's kinda like the Military. None of the branches really get along until something happens....but when something happens you better get out of their way, because together they make one hell of a show. | Posted 4 months ago Where I am from the county police were the main PD, the sheriff generally served warrants and civil papers, the state boys usually handled traffic, we did the dirty work but in all fairness we were all on the same side even though we had our differences. I has a state trooper leave his department to come to our department, that was becasue we were paid more than them and had a 20 year retirement system. Depends where you go...VBPD Sheriffs run the jail.. Officers run the streets....Here in NC we have Sheriffs that run the streets and State police...There's a rivalry with state versus local also...Related to pay...But when the chips are down any uniform forgets all that and jumps in.. |
