What differentiates, in your jurisdiction, having a response being called to a code 1, 2 or 3.  If there is a different way to explain this, I also would like to know that

Thanks in advance,

Doc

In my jurisdiction, we only have code 1 and 3.  Code 1 is just a call that doesn't require blue lights and siren.  Code 3 requires blue lights and siren.  Normally dog complaints, theft, burglary that has already happened, etc.... Code 1;  burglary in progress, wreck with injuries, fights, etc... Code 3.  The difference is response time.  All calls are important, but some take precedence.

Code 1- no hurry, use a slow response with no lights or siren, plenty of chocolate covered cream filled donuts left,

Code 2- quicker response justified and better step it up and use the roof lights, stock is starting to run low and 8 people are in line,

Code 3- there is only one of my favorite donut left and 3 people in line who all like chocolate, better use lights and siren and fly like a monkey on crank.

Ok well basically the same as above except take out the donut part oh and the monkey on crank part too

That would be a code 10-220 where I work. Some officer from the early 90's started that one and it just kinda stuck =)

We have;

Code 3 ----- routine call (yeah I know we must be the only people in the world where code 3 is routine.

code 2 ---- important call, proceed directly to.........

Code 1 ---- emergency, proceed directly, use lights and siren

Code 0 --- Officer in trouble/needs assistance, you're already late, use star trek transporter if available.

For the longest time it was, code 1, proceed directly observing all traffic rules, code 2 was step it up without lights and siren, code 3 set the roof on fire yelling and screaming all the way. In MS it is illegal to run lights without siren, but for a while code 2 was considered lights without siren.

Code 1= It's a cold call.  Nothing in progress, no one injured.  Obey all traffic laws.

Code 2 = Is harder to explain.  We use it only when there is no other traffic, but our responce is urgent.  It's rarely used.  A case would be going to a prowler call on the other side of town at 0400.  Me and the powler are the only 2 people out there.

Code 3= Urgent in progess, some ne is hurt, or about to be hurt.  you are still responcible for your actions so use your noodle.

I almost pissed myself reading your response!  We have the same response codes but that is where it ends.  Code 6 (latrine) and Code 7 (Chow) are the two widely used Codes....

We don't respond code it's just signal 9 or not. Don't remember what the code is for Trooper or officer down because we don't use a code for that we just say it.

When I worked, we had no codes. State policy stated when you traveled in excess of the posted speed limit, you were to utilize your lights, and siren as necessary.  The biggest worry with this is, no one fussed if you went on a call and didn't use your emergency equipment, unless you have an accident.  Then the Cost of damages could ( and I emphasis could) be assessed to the vehicle operator as he violated policy.  Kinda left you wide open in civil Litigation too.

We did use Signal 13 which indicated officer down, or officer needs help. Anyone hearing the call responded to that. 10-33 was emergency traffic, which also drew alot of response, but usually just those in the surrounding area.

As a kid they had us watch a film called:, "Signal 30". It was part of a drivers ed course.  If memory serves me it was somewhere in Ohio and it dealt with MVA deaths. Do you have or are you aware of this?

Thanks,

Doc

Code 1 - routine response

Code 2 - get there in an expeditious manner, use overheads

Code 3 - balls to the wall, lights and siren (used for in-progress calls, etc.)

10-94 is used to request back-up

10-24 is for when you're getting your ass kicked and need help right NOW (this merits a code 3 response).

We dont use codes in greene county tn. If it is a call that warrants an emergency response we respond 10-33 traffic. Otherwise it is routine or 10-30 traffic. 10-8 means in service and available for traffic. Oh and KSP.....signal 9 here means disregard the last call.

Never had codes. Just used the lights and sirens when we thought we needed it. Nobody got out of our way anyhow. I really enjoyed turning them on when a gangbanger walks in front of my car. Made his ass jump a foot or two and embarassed the hell out of him! To me, that was always an emergency response.

yup.  either emergency traffic - lights and siren -  or not!  there is no inbetween.  oh wait, yes there is....taking out a funeral!  and thats an entire different topic.   as far as 10 codes or signal #'s, i think they should be done away with.  especially with all the mutual aid with different agencies.

M department only has two responses---routine (code 1) no lights no siren,  and emergency (code 3) lights and siren.  By state law you are not considered an emergency response vehicle unless you have lights and siren activated.

We actually probably don't use half of our codes. It seems pointless to use any since we can't be scanned.

In Florida Signal 0 means armed with some type of weapon.

We had the same however we added:

Code 4 - Everything is okay

Code 5 - Building search

Code 6 - Traffic Stop

Code 7 - Lunch

The department I was on doesnt use codes anymore they were mandated by policy to go to plain english. And guys you might think your radio transmissions cant be scanned.. I guarantee you someone is scanning them. One department here uses the 800 mhz truncing system hoping that would keep people from listening in however you go to the local radio shack and you can buy a 800 mhz scanner that listens in on those frequencies.
