K-9 Shot to Death in Chase

Posted 2 months ago MIAMI (WSVN) -- The Broward Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of a K-9 who was allegedly killed by a man during a shootout with police. Officials said 27-year-old Delvin Lewis is accused of killing 7-year-old Oozi, a narcotics trained K-9 who was mostly used as a patrol dog. According to BSO, Lewis was involved in a domestic dispute with his girlfriend around 12:30 a.m. Thursday at a home located at Northeast 35th Court and Third Avenue in Oakland Park. Police said Lewis discharged The two-county chase ended in the parking lot at Mount Sinai Medical Center where police said the suspect opened fire and killed BSO K-9, Oozi. Police fired back, hitting Lewis. "The subject was wounded. He's over at JMH in stable condition, and we also have a Broward Sheriff' Office K-9 that was also struck. He died here on the scene despite the efforts of the medical personnel here to render aid to him," said Detective Nelda Fonticiella of the Miami-Dade Police Department. Lewis' ex-girlfriend and the mother of his 9-year-old daughter said he should not be put in jail for his actions. "He don't deserve to be in prison for the rest of his life, behind the dog," said Alesha Parnell. Parnell says although Lewis has anger management problems and a lengthy rap sheet, she says he was turning his life around. "He's a good person, and he is a very good father, and he takes very good care of his daughter. Today he had an appointment to take his daughter to cheerleading practice and he missed it," she said. "My baby was crying to me on the phone today, and said, 'They shot my daddy, mommy they shot my daddy about a dog.'" Parnell said Lewis was bitten by a K-9 back in 2003 and he likely fired his gun out of fear. "The last time the dogs bit him up, they really damaged him," she said. Lewis underwent surgery this morning and after he recovers, he will be cuffed and sent to jail. Detective Gerald Wengert was Oozi's partner in the Cooper City District. In May Wengert and Oozi were employees of the month for helping to apprehend some armed robbery suspects. BSO said he helped apprehend hundreds of suspects, including 35 this year. "I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody. " |

| Posted 2 months ago Yeah - the perp was a FINE, upstanding citizen and role model.. Whatthehell?!? But his baby's momma is just another cycled idiot spewing out vomit in order to practice for the upcoming civil lawsuit. As I've often asked of such individuals, "Why are you breathing MY oxygen?!?" RIP to the K9 (no doubt he saved many fellow officers from being injured or poss. killed by the perp) and condolences to his handler and the agency. The little guy was a fellow officer, regardless of his species. |

| Posted 2 months ago As the wife of a K-9 handler, I know how much hard work goes into training these wonderful dogs. They become a part of your family and when their life is cut short by a ruthless criminal, your heart breaks! My thoughts are with the police officer and his family for the sacrifice their brave dog made in order to bring his handler home safely. Know that you are not alone during this difficult time and that hopefully justice will prevail. |

If he opened fire on the police they should have shot him and it appears they need to go back to the range for practice. The sad part is losing the dog. The guy is turning his life around? has anger management problems? I have a problem with the liberals always saying the bad guys are they good guys and that the good guys are the bad. | Posted 2 months ago First of all I'm saddened to learn of the loss of this K-9 officer. Allow me to extend my sincerest condolences to the dog's handler, his family & his fellow officers. I'm sorry for your loss.At the same time, I don't cotton to this Alesha's testimony & pleadings on behave of the perp. He was clearly in the wrong. Yeah, he may have been turning his life around. Yeah, he might have anger management problems (personally, I'm a product of 18 1/2 yrs. of domestic violence/anger management problems, and a second relationship of seven yrs. of almost the same thing). Yeah he may be a good daddy. Yeah, the perp might have been afraid of dogs. But he had a gun! The LEOs were called to the scene because of a domestic violence/domestic disturbance call. They are the most dangerous calls a LEO can go on. And as a perp with a rap sheet, isn't he supposed to NOT have a gun in his possession? Or am I missing something here? Evidently the K-9 was sent in to help take the perp down in lieu of a human officer, or at least to distract him or something, until the LEOs could handcuff this idiot. Yeah, all of it was wrong, the perp is dead wrong and he needs to go to prison. But. I don't think he ought to go to prison for life. Certainly not LWOP, as we used to say in Calif. However, there are always consequences to our actions. This guy made his choices. He had more than just a split second to decide whether or not to get into the situation to begin with where the SO had to be called to the scene. To not throw the gun down. To not run. To not point his gun at the dog. To not shoot the K-9 officer. He escalated the incident evidently to the level where a K-9 was necessary in the first place. He needs to pay the price with a serious prison sentence......more than probagtion, more than just county time, more than just a slap-on-the-wrist prison sentence. His daughter, unfortunately, will be a side victim to this event (and may develop a bitter attitude toward law enforcement as a result, depending on how her mother handles this. She will be the main influence on the daughter's long term reaction). And, yes, if the officers didn't render this perp D.O.A. at the scene.......I'd like to know how close they were to the subject, and if they were close, were they in need of prescription glasses? If not, then some time on the range is called for. usmc6531, I'm sorry you're mourning this dog, this K-9 officer, too. I'm sure he was loved & well-regarded in your dept. R.I.P. |

No state treats the death of a police working animal as a murder. In some states, it's still a misdemeanor. Most states it's a felony., but not a capitol crime. Beyond fatigue lies compensatory hypertrophy |

| Posted 2 months ago even tho i am not an officer i can feel his pain having a good partner in a k-9 than losing him to a guy that doesnt want to get arrested. I hope he get the maximum he diserves cause even tho the suspect had a fear of dog's he shouldve known not to discharge his firearm. i know the k-9's partner will deeply miss him so will the department. On the other hand he is a father an tho the dog was shot belonged to law enforcement still to law enforcement all life is suppose 2 be presious. I know one verdict wont help that dog come back and its like losing a family member . I know that the dog probably didnt know that its life would be cut short but i bet that the dog wouldnt have had it anyother way he was doing his job i pray some good comes out of this. |

RAINBOW BRIDGE Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to the Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from you heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together......... Author unknown RIP officer Oozi. Peace be with your handler..You will meet again some day |

| Posted 2 months ago Clearly we can see that this guy has a problem. It is unfortunate that the media has to try and turn it around and make it look like he is the victim. The SOB was firing upon POs WTH is wrong with people? A sob story from ex-GF baby momma and a story fed little girl doesn't change my opinion....I am not buying in to the BS. | Posted about 1 month ago Oh, this poor man, forced to resist arrest and victimized by his opening fire on police. Has anyone made this clear to the little girl? I think it should be used as a lesson for why you respect authority and other living creatures, personally, but it looks more like they're encouraging this. The poor dog. My hope is that this is considered assault on an officer. K-9 units do so much good work. Ugh. I'll admit this burns me up. It doesn't matter that the only one he shot was the dog...he resisted arrest and opened fire on the police. Why shouldn't they shoot back? Not in law enforcement. Just a dedicated Explorer. |
a firearm and then took off. Police issued a "be on the lookout" alert and spotted him on southbound Interstate 95 near Commercial Boulevard. Dozens of police officers were hot on his trial as he crossed over into Miami-Dade County.
