I carry a 4" fixed blade smith and wesson boot knife. I like it because all i have to do is pull the thing out and use it, I dont want to have to open a knife in a quick situation. I do like the sog flash it opens real quick but you still have to assist it.

I ussually keep a cheap folder around for general field/defense use. If I happen to lose it, no problem, it's easily replaced.

I carry a SOG Spec Elite in my pocket, a Cold Steel Spike around my neck and a Ka-Bar TDI in my belt. So I have the best of both worlds. But I perfer a folder because its easier to carry off duty than a fixed blade.

This is like asking do you prefer a rifle or a shotgun?  Different tools for different jobs....a knife carried for general purpose/utility use is fine, but it shouldn't be your last ditch / emergency back up knife....

I used to carry a folding lockblade for various general use...and a couple of other edged weapons on my person as emergency back ups....

Surviving a violent gun grab will do that to ya...

I carry a SW Extreme Ops fixed blade boot knife and I just recieved my commander from EMERSON knives.  My emerson is for utility/ fighting. If for some reason I loose grip of it or end up rolling with a BG it's good to know that my Smith and Wesson is there.

On duty I carry a folder, Columbia River Knife & Tool "Crawford Kasper", flat black finish. The locking mechanism reassures that it won't close on your fingers.

For duty, I carry both.  Folder on belt and clipped in pocket, fixed in my boot.  Belt folder is primarily for utility, Benchmade 520 in pocket as my "let go of my gun NOW!" knife.  Boot knives are more 'hold-out' weapons.

Off-duty I carry a smaller folder.  And of course, I alwasy carry a Victorinox pocket knife.  ~.^
