Posted 2 months ago I am wondering how does everyone handle it when you have a fellow officer that is to friendly with inmates? If you can not face your fears you conquer nothing. |

| Posted 2 months ago Either the guy is a newbe and has not been in the field long enough to see the light or has something us his sleeve. If you haven't asked why such the friendlyness w/ the inmates, you may want to confront him. I'm sure the inmates love him, he may begin to do small favors for inmates which will lead to bigger favors (trouble) and then get himself in a corner. Don't get me wrong, don't hate the inmates but you need to project a command presence. |

Well thats the problem he seems to think he is doing a good job. He has been working about 5years. I think he needs to find another profession. He has that attitude of "They wont hurt me" Makes me want to hurt him. If you can not face your fears you conquer nothing. |

| Posted 2 months ago I would confront the guy--with other staff who may feel the same way--5 years? I'm surprised he's lasted this long. It seems we go in cycles...too nice staff equals misconduct every couple of years. The last new guy who was too nice got his block knocked off, he's not so nice anymore! |

| Posted 2 months ago I'm still fairly new to this too, but as stated above it seems to go in cycles. There is a difference (to me at least) of being nice, and being a santa clause. I have no problem with some small talk if we're passing out medication. The ussual "Hey DO, what's going on?" type stuff. But we also have a couple officers like you are talking about. One has labeled herself the "Wal-Mart greeter of the jail" and let me tell you.... what a pain. The others have the same attitude of if they're nice, the inmates will be nice too. We've all tried to talk to them, and make them see that we are not here to be their (inmates) best friends. But for what ever reason they are taking the care, custody, control thing a little too far. |

| Posted 2 months ago I try to explain to all the ones that i train. You have to find a happy medium and stay consistent. When its time to be a A#$ you will know it. And hey the guy I was refering to in my original post. Well he get his nose broke 2 days ago. I guess he will finally stop thinking "they wont hurt me". He is fine just a little bruised ego. I wish it did not happen but as most of us know it does happen. If you can not face your fears you conquer nothing. |

I agree you have to stay consistent in that happy medium......One of my fellow officers, exofficers she got fired recently, was so friendly that she was actually caught bringing in her freshly worn thong underware and giving them to an inmate....sick people. what a way to end your career.

Its been addressd with him but he seems to think he has the great answer. And no he has not been hurt yet. Keyword "YET". As we all know these inmates are getting more and more aggresive.
