I'm just wanting to hear some tales from any officer that has had good/bad use with spikes, stingers, stop sticks, whatever you call 'em. I've always heard good things from fellow cops about them here, but I've also read of the officers injured/killed while deploying them and then the suspect targets them with their vehicle or a firearm. Anyways, stories, let go!! And as always, stay safe guys/gals!!!!

Let's see...I had a 10-80(pursuit) a few months back...I was lead car..We had an officer set up spikes..well needless..he had never deployed them before.. He wound up taking out my 2 right side tires and took me out of the pursuit...

My department hadn't finished certifying him yet but..he kept the strips in his trunk...My advice is make sure if they're gonna be used..have someone who knows what they are doing deploy them.. My car got tore up..and I would up hitting a guardrail..luckily no one was seriously hurt..

We us them all the time. Last was about a month ago. We have had total success with them. Once in a while we do get one of our own units tires, but that is the cost of doing business. I would only use the throw out type that you can pull back. We have used the "Stop sticks" but the unit in pursuit has to dodge them to avoid. At night it gets tough. Make sure the units are aware they are being deployed and the exact location. Nothing like a suprize. There is a new tire for LEO being tested that will not go flat. Don't know if it is available yet. This will help. Remember to keep distance when using the spikes, to give the deployment officer time to recover.

Last time I saw them used I was third car in a pursuit, stolen car, violent, wanted felon driving, the officer tossed the sticks and the suspect ran him down at 115 mph. The suspect then surendered...Yes the officer died. I am not a fan of stop sticks or spikes or whatever they are called today.

All thats is needed for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

Grant writing. Contact your local college and ask if any of the public administration, social workers, or CJ students can do one as a project for school. It is unfortunate how low a priority law enforcement has in some areas. Crime Stats show increases, CALLS to SERVICE UP, personnel levels affected by call to duty and retirement.

In order to get funding you have got to convince them (the bureaucracy).
Good Luck!

Contact your local Wal-Mart for a donation. I just bet they will give you the money for them. Our local SO just got $8000.00 to purchase 7 tasers, just for the asking.

On another note, if your department needs a PBT, Ask your local MADD chapter for a donation for one. We got three.

Stolen vehicle heading North on I-15 coming from the county south of us. We have "Stop Stick's" Three long triangle peaces hooked together. I sent up on the down side of an over pass and put them in the center mediam to pull across when he comes by. Traffic was bad and he passed the cars in the center mediam and ran over them. I didn't even have to do anything. He spiked him self. He ended up being caught less than a mile away. Second time I had a new officer next to me and gave him the fun of spiking the car. he got the suspect and the car in front of him. The suspect ended up shooting him self right through his "Fank and Beans." it was awsome.

We use Stop Sticks.....and they have worked great in all of our pursuits....also when you use them, the company replaces them free of charge....you just have to provide them with a report on the incident.

If I may ask, how do they work? are they just vertical spikes or is there more to them?

Stop Sticks are hollowed-out spikes enclosed in a  triangular piece of plastic that you string across the road and it punctures the tires, letting air out.  I am not as familiar with spike strips, but I believe it is a similar system, just with no plastic housing over the spikes.

intersting. The closest thing i have seen to spike strips/stop sticks are the "one-way" spikes that guard entrances/exits that only let you drive over them one way. They where cool.

The last time I set out the spike strips, the driver swerved to avoid them, sending me diving for the ditch and hitting my car and a trooper's car at 100+ mph.

I had to use my spike strip about two months ago in a three agency pursuit.  It was my first time using them and I gotta tell ya its a somber feeling on the side of a two lane road looking at the headlights of the suspect vehicle.  lucky for me it was a crack head that was so out of it I doubt she ever knew they were there.  Poor trooper friend of mine though didn't get the radio traffic to back off a little and I got three of his tires to.

Good day everyone,

I am just curious if anyone's department or other near by agencies have open discussions on preventing pursuits before they start.

If you are wondering how this coincides with stop sticks, I was thinking of a sort of stop stick that you would be able to put under the drive wheel of any vehicle you stop if you feel the suspects/persons are already acting suspicious or antsie. The stop stick would have a handle that bends into a L shape with a metal jack spike that would be placed under the main drive tire.(rear wheel or front wheel depending on the type of vehicle) This may prevent assailants from getting to far and risking injury and or death to civilians and officers. This would be probably more cost effective then the ever so dreamed about egine kill sensor on cars since all agencies would have to supply patrol cars with shut down applications/computers to do so. I would love to hear responses on this because someone may think of a law or ordinance that may prevent this type of tool being used and if so why? The more we discuss these ideas the closer we get to safer stops and prevention of civilian/officer injuries/risk.

Have a safe day and remember do not become complacent, that's when something will happen.
