Cops Only: past abuse and the probability of getting hired as an LEO

Posted 4 months ago Hello, A close friend of mine who is also very interested in a law enforcement career has confided to me that she was sexually abused by a family member in her childhood. However, she has been to counseling over the years and feels that she is completely healed (and I would have never guessed such a thing had happened to her!). Her only fear now is that this part of her past will greatly decrease her probability of being hired as a LEO. Does anyone have anything to say on this matter? Thanks! |

| Posted 4 months ago I don't see where that would have anything to do with her becoming a LEO. Nothing whatsoever. I can handle anything that life throws at me~ I may not be able to handle it well, or correctly, gracefully, with finesse, or expediently ~ But I will handle it. |

Why would being a "victim" of a crime have an adverse effect on her getting hired? As a matter of fact, she will be an asset to any department she works for because she will have a far better understanding of the victims of this abuse. She has dealt with it and she should be commended for her bravery. Wish her luck in her future LEO profession! Being a Tyrant does not make one a Leader! |

| Posted 4 months ago 10-4 on what they said she should not be punished for being a victim unless she has some emotional scars that are determined to effect her professional decision making process. Pain is weakness leaving the body. Obstacles are what we see when we take our eyes off the goal. |

| Posted 4 months ago Not to be harsh but she is still thinking like a victim. If she is truly over it , then she needs to take what happened and make good use of it perhaps by dealing with children who are currently being abused. She has insight that FEW actually have.

| Posted 4 months ago It will not hurt her at all. Back when there were few female officers maybe half of the ones we had, had something happen to them in the past that inspired them to become an officer to prevent it from happening to others or help those it did happen to. Often personal experiences are the reason behind people joining whatever profession they are in be it police or nursing or doctors. Go for it and it may well even be some therapy for you. | Posted 4 months ago I think that such an event in her past would make her a better cop. I don't see how this can hurt her. As long as she has her head screwed on right she should be fine. I would warn her to watch herself because some of the stuff we deal with may bring back some hurt and pain. I wish her luck and success in her efforts. I'm sorry this happend to her. |

| Posted 4 months ago A history of being sexually abused will have no negative impact upon her ability to get a LEO job unless, as others have noted, she has some deep seated psychological problems as a result of the abuse. If she has truly learned to deal with the issues related to the abuse then she should make a fine LEO, and would bring a real understanding of victimology to the job. | Posted 4 months ago Why would this even come up? The VAST majority of agencies don't require a physc eval. I don't see where her being victimized would be a factor at all as long as she has dealt with it and moved on. Go for it. Sgt. Gilpin |

Exactly. But as another member stated, it seems as she stll has the mentlity of being a "victim", which will most definately show up in Shrink Exam. She needs to lose that "I'm a victim" mentality and once she does, she will be good to go. But with that stated, I do not believe that there i a PD in this country that would deny hiring her if she passed all over her tests, etc. being a victim of a crime is NOT a crime!! |
