For pure enjoyment of a sporting event, there is nothing that is as exciting to me as the summer Olympics.  Mastery of the most minute details of athletic articulation from the pointing of toes to the sheer brute strength displayed as a teenager hangs in an Iron Cross position from the still-rings.  Whether they are flying through the air or through the water, the grace, beauty and pure power they put on display is astounding to me.

My personal favorite events are Women's Gymnastics - floor exercise, uneven parallel bars and balance beam, Men's Gymnastics - still rings and pommel horse, Swimming (all events) and beach Beach Volley Ball.

As a complete side note, with all the presidnets, prime ministers, and other heads of state present at the games, can anybody imagine what security there is like???

What are your thoughts?

Can't wait for that one... I believe that young 'un has what it takes to sweep the gold all the way across the pool.  He's shootin' for eight which would be a record in itself.

He's already got 9 you must have missed one, he's tied for the record right now.

I think what he's talking about is that he has a chance of winning a total of eight medals this Olympics alone. I got a little confused at first because they were talking about his winning 8 medals and then said he won 9 tying him with Mark Spitz. The Today show explained that while he's tied and expected to break that record he is also expected to break the record of how many medals anyone has won in one Olympic setting.

I too am having fun watching him. He is so good and so laid back about what he is doing. They asked him about his trying to break the various records and he said the news is more focused on that than he is. He just wants to do his best and is happy with that.

OK Sorry I thought his 9 were from this one I guess I haven't seen as much as I thought.

He is probably the greatest athlete of our time. He might swim, but he is a stud. And from Baltimore and a huge Ravens fan

Phelps delivered in spades last night!  They could have swam that relay in any order and still won it but leading off with Phelps totally demoralized the field!  I'm sure after the first two lengths, he never saw  another swimmer unless he was passing them as he was coming off the wall!  What a great swim for the entire team!

Women's gymnastics really disappointed me though.  The Chinese DID out perform us... our girls just made some big errors, but it sure did seem like the Chinese were getting a better score on their bobbles and half-steps than our girls got on their errors of similar size and severity.  The medal contention came out as it should, but the point spread was exagerated by poor judging in my opinion.

Loved the interviews with Bela Carolli!  He called it like he sees it - the female Chinese gymnasts are NOT all 16 years old or older.  There's at least one in there that I'd swear is no more than 13.

Last night when Phelps did the relay, he did it with water in his goggles and unable to see anything! I liked how the announcer said his Mother could have anchored that race and the US would still have won.

I was at lunch today and they showed Phelps in another race and it looks like he won another one...that means he has only tow more and he will have won the record of the most won in one Olympic setting. He sure makes it exciting!

I do agree with you about the gymnastics. The US girls let their nerves get to them and the more they made mistakes, they made even more. It did seem like the Judges overlooked some of the Chinese bobbles and I agree some of those girls sure don't look 16.

Today was only a prelim. He still has three golds to go

The women choked last night. Can't feel too bad though. At least the American women have real lives unlike the team from China. They were saying that some of their athletes were taken away at 3 and only see their family once a year. Nothing is worth that.

See what happens when you watch TV in a restaurant on the other side of the room? I couldn't hear anything so didn't realize it was a prelim. The waitresses were no help, mine had no idea who Michael Phelps was and I heard someone else explaining to the other waitress what was going on with Phelps, but that was before his prelim today. When is his next race?

I hadn't heard that about being taken away at age 3 until today at lunch when the Officer I was having lunch with told me that. Apparently, one of the girls wanted to go home and be with her family but was not allowed to as she would embarass her family and country if she did. How sad.

Yes... it is sad that the nation takes them at such an incredibly young age to be trained... seems like something out of a science fiction book, doesn't it?  The girl you mention that wanted to go home   -  I heard her story last night.  She was taken away at 3 years old (the day a person is born in Asian culture, they are referred to as being 1) so it war essentially at the age of two that she was taken.  Many years later she called home, wanting to leave training and her parents told her that it would be better for the family if she didn't come home.  I can't imagine telling my perfectly decent kid such a thing!  The long and the short of it is mamma and daddy were being paid to let the kid go (she's 20 now) and they were probably allowed to have another baby because she was taken.  I'm betting she's got a baby brother out there somewhere.

The up-side is that while she will never have a relationship with her family, she will always be taken care of by the state.  When she can no longer compete she'll become a coach so she will essentially live in the training facility from cradle to grave.  Takes all kinds to make the world go 'round, eh?

Well, the other American swimmers didn't fair so well last night.  Phelps continues to be a real threat in the water though.  I'm getting kind of peaved with Costas being so negative about "any tiny mistake could knock Phelps off the gold medal podium"... talk about a sensationalizing nay-sayer!!!

Our men's gymnastics didn't turn out so well either - but beach volly ball (men's and women's) is doing great and so is the basketball team.  GO USA!!!

Did anyone see the race with Phelps last night? I was on patrol, but that husband said that phelps hung on by the tips of his fingernail. Said that the race was so close that next guy asked for a review. Wow! What a moment that must have been.

Babycop05, I saw that race and it was definitely a fantastic race!

The relay team won the Gold last night meaning Phelps won 8 Gold Medals in one Olympics! How exciting. I can only imagine how his team mates felt pressure, not only to win for themselves but to win for Phelps as well. They came through though.

The other person that impressed me is Dara Torres. She won the silve by a fingernail just like Phelps won the Gold the night before. She joked later that she shouldn't have filed her nails.

Apart from the Great Britain team, I have been following Michael Phelps. Possibly  going to be the best Olympian of modern times. What an athlete this young lad is.

But to watch, my favourite athletes have to be the Germans.

Mark Spitz gave a great interview the other night with Phelps.  Back in the 70's he was pretty cocky and arrogant but he has mellowed to be a very gracious champion in welcoming Phelps to stand beside him in so many records... 7 gold in one olympics (of course Phelps now has 8) 28 individual world records and a total of 32 world records when you include team relays.  Mr. Phelps has a bit more time to log in the pool but he is indeed meeting his goal of changing the face of competition swimming!

My new event to watch is the rings, I always thought it was hard, but once you try to do anything on the rings...you find out real quick that what those guys do is nearly impossible. I also enjoy the weight lifting.
