I've been getting an itch for a while now, a law enforcement itch.  I'm currently a supervisor at a ups,  and I am feeling that it is a dead end, they are taking forever to promote me, I did everything and still they just give me promises. I always had an interests in law enforcement. The itch been coming back, and its stronger than ever.  What do I need to do to get started? I'm from east orange nj, any chance of going to a department other than east orange?  What will I go through? Last I have neat tight braids, will I be forced to cut them off? Anything else please feel free to put it down. One more thing whats the ball park starting annual salarly? I know thats not the deciding factor, and it shouldnt but I';m just curious. Thanks.

OK first I'd recommend picking up some Benadryl Itch relief, Second research the web for agencies near you and contact their recruiters, just start filling out applications to take tests. Finally yes most likely your lovely locks will have to go. I was a long haired hippy freak when I went into the Army and now I wouldn't have my hair touching my ears.

There is no average starting pay, it depends on the department where you are located, too many variables to give you an answer

Andrew, you have been a member for almost a year now and you are just coming to the forums? Where have you been and did you go to introductions and tell us about yourself yet?

Even though you have not introduced yourself I'll try to provide some advice. Before you plunge into the hiring process you must do some self assessment. What draws you to the job? Could you familly handle the stress of you being on the job? Do you really know what we do out there? Could you kill another person, if that person was trying to take your life or another officers life and keep y'all from going home? Law Enforcement is not easy and I have seen alot come and go. You certainly aren't getting into it for the pay and you can find what the average pay is by researching the agencies near you.

I think I've introduced myself when I first joined here. If not  I'm Andrew 27 year old male from Jersey. I'm a supervisor at ups, my interests includes outdoor activities, sports, video games and music. Have a itch for law enforcement, I scratch the itch, but after a while, the itch always ends up coming back.

Like the others said here,  your first step is to research the depts. in your area.  Decide where you wanna go and apply.  Your appearance needs to be that of a professional so I would suggest a haircut.  About the pay, again, it depends in the area and the department.  About the itch,  if you don't have the patience to wait, find another line of work, because when you get into police work, you will be waiting a lot.

Thanks for the head up on that. So for instance, lets say I'm an officer, it ccan take years and years before I have the opportunity to get into homicide?

Correct...For example.  I work for a smaller department.  There is not way in hell that I will be anything than a road officer for the next few years.  I have to wait for someone to quit or retire.  However, larger departments have more room for advancement.  You will still have to wait and "make your bones" so to speak.

if you haven't already may I suggest you do a couple of ride alongs before making the leap.  Contact your local PD, most have provisions for ride alongs.

Yea 1 bad thign is I'm from east orange. East Orange officers are low quality, they dont do job correctly and treat residents poorly, I  would look into some other department in another city to do a ride along.

For NJ state trooper salary info is:

A biweekly sum of approximately $780.77 will be paid to recruits while training. Room and board will also be provided during training. Upon successful completion of training, the starting salary for a Trooper will be $55,719.51(including an $800 clothing allowance). The second year total compensation jumps to $62,367.69. Troopers also receive yearly increments

If you want you can move to NYC, the NYPD salary info is:

Police Officers receive full pay and benefits from their first day of recruit training. The January 2009 Police Academy class will have a starting salary of $40,361 and goes to $41,975 on August 1, 2009. The base-pay will increase every year to $76,488 after 5½ years. When including base salary, night shift differential, holiday pay, and uniform allowance, a Police Officer will earn $91,823, before overtime, after 5½ years of service.

You can also go to the web site of the department you wish to apply to, and they will have salary info. Also, in case you might have overlooked it, this web site has a "JOBS" (right below the search button at the top of the page) link that will give you departments and agencys open for hiring. Since you want to apply to a department other than East Orange that jobs link has postings for the whole USA.

Good luck!!

Had itch for 12 years and finally got on partime then it took 10 yrs to get full time. Alot of departments require you t work as a patrol officer or road officer for at least 5 yrs to season you to the job, so you must be patient. As for salary it can range from $12,000 per year to $120.000 per year. But you don't dare do this job for the money.

I have a question. If you are willing to relocate, how do you go about the hiring process to an agency that's far away? Do you need to travel there to take the poly, oral, written tests, etc? I'm from Cali but I'm willing to relocate to a PD that will hire me. Explain please :)
