Hi all,

So I'm in week 6 off my training and my trainer let me know that I'm struggling with my typing and talking.  I tend to stop talking when listening to the RP.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to overcome this?  I would really appreciate them.

Thanks in advance,

April

One of the dispatchers we trained had a problem with things like that and the supervisor let them take home a portable radio and they did "homework".  Like listening at home and just typing while you listen and act like you respond.   This helped them alot.   Good luck and hang in there !!!!

Practice Practice Practice.  Even if you cant take a radio home, practice talking and typing sitting at your computer.  The neighbors and any pets might think you are nuts, but anything you can do to practice will help

If you have a computer at home an can watch TV or listen to a radio; start typing what you are listening too - that will help.  Make sure while you are typing you are also understanding what is being discussed.

Hi again,

The practice did help some but what I think will really work will be time and repetition.  I just got released so now I start my two weeks of ghosting.  Gotta say though, this is the hardest thing I've done in my life.   Whew!!  There are still some concerns.  I'm slow, need to make sure I keep up with the mails.  Not sure how everyone else is set up but we have phones down in the basement (which is where I am) and dispatchers upstairs so if they have questions from the deputies, they send down mail.  I need to be sure and read it quickly and make sure it gets answered in the call or that I send mail back upstairs.

All I can say is that I'm going to do my very best and try hard.  Hopefully I'll improve with time.  8-)  Thanks for everyone's help.

Take care,

April

April - sounds like you will be fine. It is an acquired skill. . but once you have mastered it . . .you will be fine. Keep up the hard work. It only gets better.

Glad to hear that things are going better! Its always comforting hearing the other end of the radio, when you're out there, facing the dark alone.

I've never truly mastered it. I have always just opend the call, wrote down notes on a pad, dispatched the call, then went back in and added the info in my narrative. Of course its easy for me beacuse I am dispatching my own calls. I take the call, put it in and give it out, for the most part.

Our agency is still small enuff that usually the xtra 45 seconds or so it takes me to update the call in the cad isnt going to make a difference one way or the other in the all important response time, beacuse there usally isnt any one available to be dispatched right when I get the call, anyway.

I am glad to hear you are picking it up though, it would be a nice skill to have...

I have to agree with the time and repetition.  When I started dispatching almost 5 years ago I was struggling for 30 words per minute.  Now I am around 60-65 words per minute.  I never though I would be able to type that fast however when you do it 8 hours a day 5 days a week you are bound to improve.  If the only problem you have right now in your training is sluggish typing..... Your doing great!!

I train here at my center, and i've had trainees with the same problem. I agree that it does take practice, but I also think that for some people it's an acquired skill and that you'll get better  with time and repetition! Hang in there girl!

I agree.  All of a sudden  it will click and you will get your rhythm going!  Good luck!  I would like to hear about your setup tho.  I come from a larger agency, and we have a CAD that is horrible. It does not matter  how fast you can type the system cant keep up w/it  Screens scroll on top of screens and  locking up is an everyday  happening.  Dont really want to discuss it on open forum but open to questions from friends.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
