I have worked in law enforcement in both California and Texas.  I was shocked when I moved to Texas to find it a common place thing for police officers to be hired, privately, to do off-duty security work and to do it in their department uniform.

I would like to hear about how things work in other states in regards to off-duty work for law enforcement officers.  Is it accepted and, if so, to what extent?

it is acceptable in Greene County, TN.  with what little we make, its almost a must to do.  we do private security for local businesses whenever the need is there or slow down the traffic when construction crews are working the main highways.  also, we assist other agencies and counties (like Sullivan County during the Bristol races).  as to what extent, to whatever is called upon.

All off duty employment is handled through our department where I work. While we technically work for whatever business we are at at that time we are allowed to wear our uniforms. I think it is about the same for most agencies in Georgia.

Altho' not yet an LEO, I know AZ -- at least the Phoenix PD -- allowed LEOs to work off duty sites in their uniforms and at some places like road construction sites they also had their squads.  Our one neighbor was a deputy and he was also allowed to work in this same manner.

Our church there held over 10,000  and we had two services in the morning and one in the evening with standing room only at every service.  We hired off duty officers to be there every service.  Usually it was the same officers that came so we all know them and they knew many of us -- especially those of us that were busy working in the church.  We needed armed security due to the large offerings received every service.  We had to take the offering from the church across the campus to the administration building every service.  We had 3-5 officers normal weeks.

During our Christmas and Easter Pagents, we had more.  Depended on the time of the show and who was going to be there.  We would move everyone closer together and squeeze extra people into the sanctuary.  Fire marshal allowed this as long as he was able to come to every show.

In NY where I live some of the local County Sheriff's Deputy's work Off Duty Security work in full county uniform. My Department doesn't have a policy that say's we can't, but I'm sure the mayor would say NO and here is one of many reasons why:

When working off duty you are no longer being paid by the department who's uniform you are wearing but by a private citizen. If you get hurt or hurt someone else, who's going to back you??? The department whom you are employed with is only obligated to back you when on the clock performing your official duties. If you are wearing your Police uniform while working for a Licensed and insured Security Agency then maybe you would be covered but not when you are working under the table and off duty. BAD IDEA!!!! It is unlawfull in NY under Business Law to do this but it is not enforced. I work security wearing my Police gear at times, but I do it while on the clock with a licensed and insured Security Company. CYA!!!

WHO'S IN CHARGE OF THIS MESS???

My agency, here in Alabama, has to approve the off duty job. We cannot work inside a bar or do any type of private investigative work.

Florida- For state officers, extra-duty work is a privlidge that the unions fought to include in our contracts (according to them at least )

it has to be approved by your employing agency and there is a limit to the hours you can work per week. (32 I believe)

I work part time jobs at least 2 nights a week, sometimes 3 or 4 nights.  I do it in my issued uniform and in a department vehicle.  Liabilities aside, I can't afford not to work the extra jobs.

I think that we can pretty much work anywhere we want but we cannot have a liquor license or work for any company that does business with our dept, FL. Dept of Corrections, and we cannot wear our state uniform anywhere else but on the clock. Hell, they pitch a fit if you get gas in your uniform. It's a big thing down here.

I moved to Oregon From Georgia. Unfortunately I ddi not find out untill after the move that you are not allowed to do off duty security work. In Georgia we may get hired to provide traffic control for road repair contractor within our jurisdiction. Most of the tiem it is in uniform in the city car. The contractor then pays the officer directly. Of course the department must approve it.

In Oregon the contractor would have ot contract with your agency and repay them for your services at an overtime rate. This was aproblem for me because I lost about 10k a year in additional income.
