6.5 or 6.8
Posted 3 months ago For those who are in another group this will be double post for you. I've been thinking about buying a new weapon. There is alot of talk about the M4 being obsolete. Knock down power and accuracy at far distances is very minimal. I've been loking into the 6.8 or 6.5 since they are heavy rounds and can produce grater amounts of kenetic energy that will efficently kill the target at over 100 yards. Any thoughts on this subject would be appreciated. "Amateurs talk hardware. Professionals talk software. It doesn't matter what's in your hand or between your legs. | Posted 3 months ago In my opinion the M4 will never be obsolete, but the DPMS Panther is a very nice carbine! 308 baby! I've heard it will penetrate 2 concrete walls but have not yet tested that theory! without truth there is no justice |

| Posted 3 months ago I've heard many things about the panther. A contractor buddy that works with me has one in 556. Outstanding weapon. I'm just looking to upgrade to something new. I already have my M4 and I'm almost done pimping it out, so now I'm looking for a higher power weapon. I've many good things about the 6.5 and the 6.8 since they're heavy rounds. One thing you must take into consideration is the availability of ammo. The 6.8 as of now has a greater availability of ammo than the 6.5. Hornaday is making the 6.8 in a TAP Round, additionally several other companies are putting out hunting rounds for the 6.8. From what I have read the 6.5 has a better ballistic coefficient that he 6.8 at longer ranges. But you still need to look availability due to limited supply in the first place with the 6.8 and the 6.5. You can pretty much get 5.56 any where, and even 7.62 is more available that 6.8 or 6.5. So if you are looking for more knockdown power you would be better served with a 7.62 and you can get them in an AR platform.

| Posted 3 months ago I've heard that a lot lately, don't those rounds tumble? No good for distance? without truth there is no justice |

| Posted 2 months ago The 223/5.56 is hard to beat. Everyone has their opinion, but most of the civilians have their opinion based on what the gun writers print. Just think, the gun scribes get paid for what they write, continually repeating praise of the 223 and 308 don't get a front page article...but make a scathing remark about a well founded item, and you'll shoot to the top (for a short while). The 223 is a fine round. Long distance precision, the 62 to 77 grain bullets are hard to beat. Short range, the 55 grainers are excellent, just use as much barrel as possible. If you don't like the 223, go with the 308. Hard to beat proven knock down power and accuracy. And me, I have an M4 handy with 20 round magazine with 55 grain loads. The Bushmaster and DPMS 308's are in the gun safe, handy but out of the way. The M4 worked quite well for me in Somalia and Desert Storm. I just returned from 15 months in Afghanistan, and it still works well. Know the weapon, know your ammunition parameters (not just limits) build skills.

| Posted 2 months ago All very good information here. I also agree with alot of you here. The 223/5.56 has the best availability aposed to the 6.5 or 6.8. I have thought long and hard on the 308 model as well. I think the easiest thing to do would be to just by a 308 and build on that, plus some of my other gear could be used on that platform as well. It took a while but finally people started chiming in. Thanks for the info "Amateurs talk hardware. Professionals talk software. It doesn't matter what's in your hand or between your legs. | Posted 2 months ago I havent heard of the M4 going obsolete, but with the popularity of the 5.56 and the mass production of it, the M16 family wont become obsolete for a LONG time. Especially from a military stand point, too much of the stuff is in use and wont be going away anytime soon. Though I have heard good things about the 6.5 and 6.8, I think those rounds, given enough time, will be quite popular.
