So just wondering if you work Narc or Bomb...and what kind of dog do you currently have?  If you aren't k-9 are you inspiring to be one or are you just a dog lover?

I've handled a drug, explosives, cadaver, mine dog, tracker and a patrol dog. I'm currently  the trainer for the law enforcement agency I work for. We currently have 45 dogs. A mixture of patrol, drug, explosives, cadaver and track. We currently have GSD's, Mals, Labs and down south sittin on the front porch bloodhound that can track a popcorn fart in a blizzard.

Well I am currently assigned Bomb/Patrol Dutch Shepherd.  He loves his job and loves to work.  He is a big teddy bear and sometimes is too friendly. He definitely knows when it is time to work though.  We have about 14 dogs assigned to us and 6 of them are overseas right now.  So they are definitely keeping our dogs buys.

At first I thought I did not want a social dog at all. I now think he has to be some what social to work in police work and interact with m y crew.

I really prefer a more social dog. I had one that was a real butt. He had a hair trigger and you never knew what was going to set him off. He was a real PiTA to work. That dog didn't even like me ha ha. A real nutjob. Great tracker and one heck of a drug dog, but his primary goal in life was to hurt someone.

When I first got mine for Holland someone drew devil horns on his air crate. He hated to be moved in that thing and he showed it. When my sgt called and asked how "tough" of a dog I wanted. I told him  a "real street dog." It took everyone in the office a good year to believe me that he's not too crazy and that you can play with him.

I have to agree that it is better to have a more friendly dog than a handler aggressive dog.  You can actually relax to an extent with a friendly dog.  When you have a handler aggressive dog you always have to be on your toes and keep people away from him.

Well I'm not an LEO but I am married to one. I always wanted to be a dog trainer and I wanted to specialize in K-9 training and I love german shepherds. I almost went to school to do just that too but it was going to cost a lot to go and I was unable to come up with the money. But I love hearing about K-9 dogs and I would still love to be able to work with one.

A police service dog that is positively social is a much easier(or less headache) to train. I've got Mals, a Dutchie and a GS in my unit; all very social. If we have a PSD that exhibits social aggression toward another animal or a person, we go to great lengths to suppress that aggression and we encourage our dogs to be neutral to other animals no matter what. We also go to extremes to neutralize our dogs to decoys, gun fire and every other stimulus you can think of because that is true control of the dog and that is what you should have. When you'e got true control, success comes much easier.

I work a male GSD as a patrol dog, I will be looking to cross train to work with our firearms unit when he is a bit older.

Cross train as what; to detect firearms? Just curious.

We work with our dogs to get them used to their surrounds, gunfire and all that also.  I work my dog off leash all the time and do aggression off leash.  We do what they call recalling the bullet where we will send our dog after someone and then call the dog off the person before the dog bites the person.  My current task is getting my dog to relax in gunfire enviornments.  When I have the gun my dog is all content, but if someone else has a gun and is firing it he is very aggressive towards the person.  So that is my current task to get him used to gunfire.  If any of you have some suggestions on what to do I am open to hear them.  I am currently with my Dutch Shepherd (the picture).

To work with the teams on armed op's similar to what you guy's have working with SWAT, bearing in mind I'm in England and most officers do not carry routinely

Ahhhh so, that makes sense. I just wasn't sure what you meant. That "not carrying guns" thing is a bit unnerving to me, ha ha.

GSD trained for explosives and trailing.  Extremely social, but the most kennel protective dog I've worked yet.  I will definately not have to worry about anyone suprising me in my truck.

I am waiting on a response from the Chief in regards if i will become a k-9 officer. Should know in a couple weeks. It is between me and another officer. If i am blessed to get the k-9 i will be going to Global Training Academy. We now have a german shephard male (narcotics only). the new addition will be a german shephard dual purpose. Just certified with my dog tonight.  He is Explosive/Patrol.  Hit the streets starting Saturday.  I am going to be deploying the end of January though....so won't have a whole lot of time on the streets with him before we start training for the deployment.

Going back to the original post. DFrost has one of the largest units in the country. San Diego PD hasd the largest with 49 dogs. Both have nice units. Adual purpose dog is the most pactical choice. Wether it is bomb or narc, make the most from your dog. When it comes to playing these police games, the dog is far beyond the handler.
