Hi, I'm interested in knowing what you prefer.  What is the best job between patrol, vice/drugs, traffic, and investigations, or anything else, and why?

There are as many answers to this question as there is to what kind of car you like. Often times it's whatever floats your boat. Most everyone starts the same way, working the street. They then try to gravitate to those areas that interest them. Of course, only us K9'ers are the lucky ones and get the best job. ha ha

I know guys that love working dope, I hate it. I work in traffic and I can't picture doing anything else. I know other cops that think I am a nut. It all depends on what you like to do. In a larger department usually anywhere in the Special Operations family is a good place to be.

I have a question why is your avatar a police patch, are you a cop if so why are you asking this question, are you a rookie looking for a possible transfer to a special section??

My personal feeling is Special Op's is the best as far as my department goes.   We get to work on the water most the year which I really enjoy.  We also get our share of the road so it keeps us from getting bored with the water and our road skills sharp.  But like DFrost said, it depends what you like.  Mounted patrol isn't bad either.

I worked the street the whole time with the exception of a year undercover, so I guess I would say the street because that is where the action is the rest is kind of like clean up they take the ball and run once you are done on the street.

Well, it depends but generally everyone starts as an officer/ deputy etc. working the street and as your experience level grows so does the  chance to move into speical units like K-9, drugs/vice, motors /traffic, investigations or maybe supervision .   I've always enjoyed patrol and have a special interest in crash investigations and traffic enforcement, but a promotion in the patrol unit has trapped me in the office more than I like.  We have officers that love bicycles, and different K-9 assignments like, narcotics,  explosives, or narcotics/ patrol. We have several officers on different task forces. Guess you just find an area of interest and work towards that goal.

I've worked street crime units

(Plain Cloths) for a short time, it's o.k. on the track for other units, detective, narc. etc. my deal always was uniform, boss or other wise!

I like the administrative side of things.  I love preparing a budget and seeing the budget (after being approved by the powers that be) implemented to purchase officer safety  equipment and other tools to assist me and my officers do their job.  I also like scheduling.  I am proud to say that I have been Chief for 2 1/2 years and I have never had do deny an officer any requested days off.  I also like finding and sending officers to training.  I enjoy working on UCR reports and grants.  I love just about everything about my job except one thing...discipline.  I am getting better at it even though I don't have to go into that mode too often.

Jennifer--I've worked just about all positions from street to Chief.  I've always had the experience I wanted and got out of the experience exactly what I put into it.  When I was younger, I put in the effort that I thought was apropriate and was rewarded for the effort, but as I got older, the effort I put in was more than I would have put in when I was younger.  Again I was rewarded for the effort.  So, you like the rest of us will have to work your way through the positions you are in.  The effort you put in will determine the next step/level you go to.  Your rewards will be based on what you put in to the position.  Best wishes on your path.  Carl

Like some here, in 16 years, I have worked everything from street, dope, K-9, investigations, Tactical Medic and Chief of Police.  I like investigations but I prefer patrol.  Being the Chief was great for a couple of year tour but my heart belongs on the street.

I have missed out on one thing so far and I am starting to lean more toward Traffic.  It's something I haven't had the opportunity to get into and I think I would enjoy it.

Someone way up compared it to cars and they were exactly right.  You taste may change a few times over hte years.

If I have offended anyone, so be it.

Well, it would depend on what you like. Some like patrol, swat, k9, investigations, computer forensics, school resource...you have to find out what it is that makes you happy.

For me....I'm in the Firearms Unit. I love it there....I like teaching Officers and attending new training classes. You will definitely need to work the road first to get an idea of where you want to be though.

Private Company, details over seas. Big money. Other than that, I would love to stay on the road.

I personally would not want to be locked into doing any one thing.  When you work the streets, you get a taste of everything.  I don't know how I will feel 5 or 10 years from now, but it's patrols for me right now.

I love the road. Taking calls, and stopping cars.

I would consider being in a traffic unit specifically, should my department ever be large enough to get one.
