I am thinking of joining the Marine Reserves before I get hired as a Police Officer, should I risk getting injured if it ever so happens that I get shiped off the Iraq or finish college and go straight into Law Enforcement?

I think joining would give me the edge when it comes to the hiring process and that it will provide me with the skills needed to survive through anything life might throw at me. Although the last thing I want is to let's say go to Iraq and loose an arm or leg and be disabled for the rest of my life. Law Enforcement is the ONLY Career for me and I will not settle for anything else.

Suggestions?

If you're worried about getting hurt, become an accountant.  If you have time to kill until the academy, I can't think of a better route than the military, Marines or otherwise.  I wasted my time and would have gone military had I known where my path would bring me.  Believe me, both of my boys will know all about the ROTC option!  Both the military and policework require a certain calling to be successful. No one can pay you enough to be miserable.  I wouldn't forgo the military simply because you're worried about injury.  Statistically, it's a long shot to have a loss of limb injury.  On the other hand, if you know any cops, ask how many of their co-workers have bad backs!!

I'd say join the Corps. Being a civilian, I saw first hand how guys with the Military background had the upper edge. You'll also get a lot of training with firearms, tactics, hand-to-hand, etc. that civilians don't get.

And like they said before. If you're worried about getting hurt, neither job should be a choice.

Chris, you hit the nail on the head.  To the guy who is worried about going into any of the 5 military branches in reference to getting hurt......if you dont want to serve your country, dont do it. Most people dont. Less than 1% of the American population does military service. However, I think you should step back and take a look at what you wrote...it went something like this....

"I want to serve in the United States Marine Corps. An organization that is one of the 2 land fighting forces of the U.S. Military. An organization that is often the tip of the spear of American military expeditionary might. I also want to be a police officer after that......but.....Im scared I might get hurt......."

Doesnt sound too impressive does it....

You join The Corps because you want to be a Marine!.... NOT because you have some xtra time on your hands. I remember asking the recruiter what the USMC could do for me and he said "Not a goddamn thing. What the hell can YOU do for my Corps!" Think about it.

They told (us) to open up the Embassy, or "we'll blow you away." And then they looked up and saw the Marines on the roof with these really big guns, and they said in Somali, "Igaralli ahow," which means "Excuse me, I didn't mean it, my mistake".

Well first off, Im not sure if I am correct in replying to this because I am not a LEO, however am a Marine who has completed 2 tours in Iraq and am currently in the hiring process for LE. I would say join bro, I am 21 and nothing could of prepared for LE like this, and as for getting hurt, thats a risk you have to take, America wouldnt be America if all of our past veteran/hereos who got hurt or killed asked that and decided not to join. The decision to join has to come from within, you dont join this organization cause it sounds cool or just cause you want the title and resume'. You join cause you want to fight for your country and pick up valuable lessons along the way. Go for it brother, but dont think about getting hurt, think postively and you will be alright, I hope to have you as brother in arms, both in the Marine Corp and LE feild, best of luck to you in making you decision. Dont look back in 20 years and regret your decision!!!

The Marine Corps is not something you aren't sure about. You need to know what you want and then go get it. Law Enforcement is going to be here for you for some time to come. Think about who you are, about who you want to be, and what you are willing to give to get there. It doesn't hurt to have a goal for your future, just don't get there by the path of least resistance because you will regret that one day. The Marine Corps will prepare you in a way nothing else will for a job as a Police Officer. No doubt in my mind. But before everything else it will give you a chance to earn spurs that only a very few can wear and wear for the rest of thier lives. Don't let getting hurt be the thing that makes up your mind. It has to be deeper than that.

I agree with Hut!!  Join because you want to, not because you think it will help!!  I spent 9 years in the Marie Reserves and 1 tour in Iraq.  Being a Marine has helped me in my job and I think helped me get a job.  But I enlisted before my senior year in highschool, and left 2 days after graduation.  I joined because I WANTED to be the best there is!    And the whole injury worry.....  yeah 54000 cops were assaulted last year.  This line of work isn't the safest either!  And looking at the most recent stats, the US death rate is about .62 a day in Iraq.  For 2007 US LEO death rate was .47.  Not much a difference!!  About 1 death every other day...  Not something to brag about, but some things aren't as dangerous as you think!!  The media isn't going to report how safe it's getting over there, verses telling you how bad it's going.

One of my regrets in life was that I never joined any branch of the military.  Like what everyone here said, don't join if you think it would help your chances of getting into LE, but because YOU want to.  It's a commitment, just like getting into LE.  The Military will help you to mature as a person and to experience things that civilians (like me) would never see.  We have a lot of former Military guys where I work at and they said it was the best experience of their lives.

I have trained and assisted in removing several recruits because they were fresh out of college and had no life experience.  They were overwhelmed because this was their first "real" job.

So what if you get hurt, it's a part of life.  Life is never fair.  Everyone here, I'm sure, had a back-up plan in life if they did not get into LE.  Sometimes things never go the way you want to.

I'm not trying to push you off from a career in LE, but don't put your eggs in one basket.  Keep educating your mind and keeping fit.

Good luck Alan.
