Posted about 1 month ago What kind of advice would you give to a person trying to get into law enforcement who keeps running into dead-ends. I have been trying for a couple of years now, (I am currently aCJ student) but keep getting passed over for people who have already gone through the academy. And the agencies that would hire me can't afford to send me through the training required. I can't afford to go through the academy on my own(family), do you know of any fedral grants that may help, or have any ideas? I mean what worked for you?

| Posted about 1 month ago Here in Virginia the department will send you through their academy after being hired, sorry not up to speed with the system your refering too... | Posted about 1 month ago Maine Criminal Justice Academy (required for all full time officers) authorizes Student Loan payments. Have you tried that? I expect and I accept that I will be challenged, threatened or attacked. When I am, I will make it impossible for the suspect to be successful. |

| Posted about 1 month ago They don't have a payment plan? The local sheriffs academy is one example around here that offers payments of 255 per month minimum if you don't pay anything up front Don't forget... the toes you step on today might be attached to the ass you'll be kissing tomorrow! |

| Posted about 1 month ago This question isn't meant to measure your level of determination, but have you considered moving out of your area? The area I'm in has been consistently hiring at the 6 + local agencies for a few years now. I can't hink of an agency around here that doesn't pay for your academy training/full gear right down to the "keepers". Only things I really had to buy on my own were my flashlight and boots... I think even those are being issued now. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I agree with THIRDWATCH. If this is really what you want to do, you might need to consider applying with departments in other areas. I live in MI, which is one of the worst areas right now as far as getting a LE position. I graduated from the academy in 12/05 and didn't find a job until last Oct. Before I was offered my position, I had begun the process in a few departments in the Chicago area. Also, I don't know how it is where you are from, but I also had to use student loans to pay for the academy. Anyway, just my 2 cents - good luck!!! |

| Posted about 1 month ago I agree with THIRDWATCHNORTH. They have had previous discussions on this type of thread. There are many departments that pay for their officers to attend the acadmey because they are reimbursed by the state. Shop around, you may find a department that pays for your training. |

I would like to do that, but my wife doesn't want to move that far and my custody arrangement with my kids (joint). I don't know if I could legally move that far. Know how to listen, and you will profit even from those who say nothing. |

| Posted about 1 month ago There are loans you can apply for to pay for the training....Sallie Mae has loans that are for this kind of stuff. Many people I know did that in the academy I went through because it is indeed very expensive after all is said and done. As a Marine who should have your GI Bill benefits. That’s how I went to a private police academy in Houston. Make the military pay some of your way, and you can use the GI Bill for college and the academy at the same time (I did it). Check out how hard the test is. As a CJ student you may be able to “challenge” the certification test before going to the academy. At least you can in Texas, and I hate to sound pompous but if you can do it here you should be able to do it anywhere. Texas has some of the hardest requirements for law enforcement that any other state.
