I use the lose fit T-shirt type under my gear.  Some shirts are going on 4 years or so.  Work great for wicking sweat and dry out quickly.  We got a very good deal on the shirts and I picked up several.

I LOVE under armor,

I wear the compression shorts for work out and parades(stops the "friction" when marching), I wear the white compression Ts under my working uniform to give it the tight look with out having to readjust my undershirt every 5 seconds, and since we dont have heavy winter working uniform anymore im going to get some leggings. Also I have a tactical cold gear mock turtle neck that I where for hunting.

Some of the knock off brands work well, and the Nike and other name-brand compression gear works just as well, but none of them match the cold gear in my experience.

I use the under armor shirts during the summer, they are great. I haven't used the cold gear ones as of yet, but the gold gear pants are pretty good. There are many other types out there that don't have the "Under Armour" name to them, and friends have said they work just the same.

I wear the 5.11 t-shirts in the summer months. Much cheaper than under armour. They work great and are much cheaper than the under armour. Great for wicking away the moisture and the vest does not bind up. In the winter I wear the under armour cold gear, both tops and bottoms. They cut the cold and the wind. I rarely wear a coat or jacket unless I am going to be outside for a long time. You can order direct from under armour if you can't find what you want in the store. Same price and on some orders they offer free shipping. I ordered my last set direct and had good luck with them.

I cannot vouch for an officer's perspective, but i used them when i did tree care. the hot gear (compression) shirts worked great, but i came home all stinky because the shirt was covered with the sweat that it "wicked" off my body.

i also had the cold gear compression shirt. for me, it did nothingwhile i was stationary or walking, but once i got moving and actually working (hauling brush and working up a sweat), it warmed my up enough to not need a jacket.

i have not tried any other products to compare

I like under armour for working out they have cute matching gear for girls. Like a lot of other ppl I like wearing the compression shirts under my vest and uniform in the summer.. buuut I like the walmart brand a whole lot more though for undershirts than under armour. They make some for like 10 bucks ( versus the 30 or so for an under armour one), work just as well and they are longer than the female under armour compression shirts . Give em a shot for the hell of it, I didnt think I would like em but a fellow deputy told me about them and I really really like em. I think the brand is like athletic works they dont come in a pack but on a hanger in a few colors

I love using it in the colder months.  I have the UA cold gear mock turtlenecks and they work great in the cold winter months.  Plus when I'm outside and citizens are shaking in the cold they just look and ask "aren't you cold?"  Kinda funny

I wish I could afford to try it. Until the kids get grown, I'll just have to stick with good old fassion long johns.

I would like to wear some Under Armour or similar products but I'm a bit concerned about the safety factor.  Is anyone else?  Those shirts are made of polyester which melts when heated, causing severe burns.  Troops in Iraq have suffered terribly because of this.  As an Officer we may have to run into a burning building and there is always the chance of being in a vehicle accident, and with the Crown Vics history of catching on fire that could be bad.

For now I'm sticking to long johns and other old school products to keep warm in winter, and just sweat it out in summer.

Unless someone knows of some good Under Armour alternatives.

twidget I heard about that too, the shirts melting in extreme heat. I guess its a possibility. Ive heard that smoke inhalation kills you more often than flames...so who knows..being a cop you put yourself on the line a lot right?. I would never ever ever go back to cotton esp in the summer months after using compression shirts.

Bingo, you just laid out the reason why I dont use underarmor. I know they are "tacticool", but youre exactly right....we found out pretty early not to wear them in tactical situations because it will melt in extreme temperatures. Like you also mentioned, a patrol type LEO shouldnt have as much of an issue as a Soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan or a SWAT officer in action....however....

Unless it is FR rated, there is just as much risk of melting with poly blend uniforms.  (look on uniform label for an NFPA rating or the words "Flame Resistant" or FR rated)  The good news is that there are alternatives for undershirts.  I can't recall the other brands at the moment but I do know that Zensah and DriFire are two brand names that offer flame resistant or fire resistant undershirts.  FR rated apparel will typically come with care instructions (for cleaning) which are important to maintain the FR properties of the fabric.

Thanks Elizabeth for pointing me toward DriFire.  Some of those are going on my Christmas list for sure!

You are correct DaveyD... its actually labeled as flame resistant and fire resistant and available in a long sleeve.

I wear them religiously! As far as them melting in extreme heat, I'll just have to take that chance. I sweat more often than running inside burning buildings. As of now, I won't go back to cotton t-shirts. My only complaint is the cost of UA shirts!!!!!

This is now the second winter I've been wearing these gloves by under armour.

They balance keeping your hands warm and maintaining dexterity of the fingers well....but because they're a fabric-like material they're completely useless in wet conditions until they dry out your hands will be freezing.

Also I had 2 under armour shirts before but I never wear them to work anymore...did it a couple of times but my vest slides around on top of it and it's annoying.

There is a base layer shirt made by AdventureTech that solves the shift problem.  Now they are not FR rated but... it has seamless, super-breathable panels to help keep you dry and the material does not have that synthetic sheen which is why your vest shifts on the slick surface.

AdventureTech baselayer shirts are available in L/S and S/S.  They are anti-odor, anti-microbial and anti-static.  You will be amazed on how soft this fabric is.  Propper offers the base layer shirts & leggings.   Blackhawk (also the parent owner of AdventureTech) will launch their version of this same line in February, with an expanded selection of various shirt styles, the leggings, and new boxers.   The two images below are from Propper (tan shown) and Blackhawk (black shown)

Like many others have said. Go to Dicks Sporting Goods and get you a compression cold gear shirt. Wear it under your T-Shirt and vest. With your uniform and police coat you will be warm. Unless it goes below zero you wont be cold enough to feel impaired.

The normal ones run about 40 or 50 and the fancy ones run about 60 to 70.
