I think the better question is what is the starting salary and cost of living for the area. 40 thou a year in VA is ALOT better than say 50's in NYC. The area of VA where I work you can Buy a 4BR on over an acre for around 100 Grand can you do that in NYC...... NOPE... So take in to consideration the area too.

U.S. Border Patrol starting pay is 35K - 45K depending on your starting pay grade. The pay jumps after your first year and OT is basically a mandatory thing.

http://jobsearch.usajobs.opm.gov/jobsearch.asp?sort=rv&vw=d&brd=3876&ss=0&customapplicant=15513,15514,15515,15669,15523,15512,15516,45575&q=border+patrol+agent

Customs, ICE, etc all pays better....sucks to be the red-headed step-child of the government. Still, you couldn't bribe me to go to another agency...I have too much fun here.

Here starting is 35K but in 4 years its up to something like 73K. Of course you can't touch a 3 bedroom house in a neighborhood where you would raise kids for under 250K

i think we start out at around 30k but there are 8 steps to the grade so stepped out no overtime it is 55k but with the mandatory and vol OT you basically choose your salary and here in bloomington IL it depends on the neighborhood you are looking at when it comes to the price of housing my subdivision is 130k-160k the subd behind us is 400k to 600k then the townhouses that are in my backyard are 160k

even with my wifes salary at the biggest employer in town i still have to work 10-15 hours of overtime a pay period to help pay for GAS and daycare so that we can have extra spending money every month
