Because no one pipes up for a call....or we don't like you so you get sent to the ridiculous calls......lol.....or because you are closer than any other unit...

it's what I get paid to do!! I told a man once that I get paid to tell troopers where to go. His response was, "I told a trooper where to go once and I went to jail!" LMAO

because you guys somtetimes can't multi-task beyond what is in front of you. i told a trooper once that there are days where i feel like one of those guys at the airport with the glow sticks directing airplanes at the terminal.

AMEN to ALL the above!! If we just AIR a call and yall ignore us, then we'll not be happy campers. We had this one deputy who is now a Sgt. he NEVER let you air a call twice. Even if he was ON a call, he'd wait just a few for someone to respond and if no one did he'd advise he'd take it as soon as he finished. There ARE a few of those around, but with GPS now, I try to at least keep them in the area they are already in if possible. I do try to save the county gas money!! Its NOT always possible, but I do try.

It is the same with almost everywhere you go. Somedays you want to mud stomp the dispatchers, and other days, you feel like naming your children after them.
Some of us are pricks, and some of them are pricks....kinda like a normal disfunctional family!:)

I seriously dislike "any unit in the area of...." and then crickets. I can't wait until GPS trackers so that those that dodge calls (we all have them) can either pony up, retire, or be run off for dereliction of duty. I HATE hearing a call twice!! Tell that unit where to go; if there is a problem, call a supervisor.

Me too. We dont do the "any unit" deal unless its right at shift change and everyone is at/near the office.
The rest of the time we are giving the call to the zone car, then the next closest zone car, then the sarge, then, god forbid, the LT...Then wait for the explosion becuase LT doesn't think he should EVER write a report

I once called out looking for the post car and after no response from the post car and no response from any other unit I once said CRICKETS on the radio; ONLY to have several cars in the area of the call me and ask if I had actually said that on the radio...sometimes I feel like I'm babysitting and INCREDIBLY UNDERPAID! lol

I have extra leverage at my agency... my guys don't get to sit down on a lunch break til I say so... it's amazing how much more pleasant officers become as they get hungrier... =)

I will lighten the mood a bit......after 10 years, my heart still jumps when my number is called on the radio. I love the excitement of being sent somewhere - the unknown. I feel a real connection with my dispatchers and I trust them with my life. Because I work alone many times and cover a large area, I rely on them to gather information or research things on the computer to give me that vital edge. A good dispatcher can make or break a shift, and the bad ones don't seem to stick around very long. There have been times I come back to the station, exhausted, needing to sort through a ton of paperwork, and they have it all organized for me. Thats what teamwork is....and I sure appreciate it.

I agree completely. A good dispatcher can smooth things out by using their heads and prioritizing the information they give you. When you are in a small department, you have to prioritize enough and a good dispatcher still gives you all the information, just in the way you need to use it.

Its great to hear the good comments about dispatchers!! We appreciate it when we hear good things. gv you are so right about a small pd, that's the kind of pd I dispatch for and it is so different from the big city pd's. Hope ya'll have a great night and stay safe
