DEBUGGING YOUR DISPATCH CENTER

Posted about 1 month ago the 2008 From NENA/APCO State Conference: We had a great session about joining SWAT (Stopping What Ails Telecommunicators), titled "Debugging Your Dispatch Center" by Barry Furey (Raleigh-Wake 911). The class took a humorous look at the various "pests" that "infest" a PSAP, depicted as different types of insects. The focus of the class on the telecommunicator level is to make sure that we are not one of these!
Moth (genus no glamorous noseeme): Drawn only to bright lights. This is the TC that doesn't want to do anything that isn't high-profile.
Grasshopper (genus jumpus aroundus): Jumps from task to task without finishing.
Cockroach (genus spreadus rumorous): Thrives on trash, scatters when the light comes on. This is the TC who likes to spread rumors but never seems to be around when leaders try to find out how word got disseminated.
Killer Bees (genus progressa mortalis): Impede positive change with "buzzwords" (it can't be done, we're too big, we're too small, etc.).
Mosquitos (genus needs infinitum): Drain blood from productive staff and infect the organization with their constant needs.
Crickets (genus complainum nonstopum): Always making noise about something.
Preying mantis (genus rookie terminus): Specializes in eating tender young insects (new trainees).
Inchworm (genus rules nocomprehendum): Given an inch, takes a mile.
Bookworm (genus barrister outhousium): Fluent at alternate interpretations of any and all rules.
Black widow (genus badgebunnius maximus): Spends more time looking for a mate than handling calls.
Silkworm (genus craftshow preparum): Concentrates on personal projects rather than business.
Bedbugs (genus excusam dailium): Prefer the comfort of their own nest to that of the work environment.
Jitterbug (genus maximus minimus): Always jumpy and gets excited at the most basic of issues.
Snail (genus dragum feetum): Works at their own pace, which is usually very slow.
Tapeworm (genus freeloadium continual): Insatiable appetite, usually for other's food.
Caterpillars (genus pokemprodum): Can become butterflies, but can be hard to draw out of their cocoons.
SWAT (Stopping What Ails Telecommunicators) the bugs:
As with natural pests, there are prevention methods (good screening). There are also ways to deal with pests once inside (remember that not all pesticides work with all insects, and not all methods work with all people). Sometimes natural methods work best, like other insects (peer pressure).
One last insect is the worker ant , which is the backbone of the organization and where every telecommunicator should strive to be. Leaders should also remember to throw them some "sugar" from time to time!
