No Background Check??
Posted about 1 month ago My husband was in the process with our local PD. He took the written ... did quite well. Aced the physical agility test. He was given a background packet and was told they would complete his background investigation and then he would move on to the next portion of the process which was the medical, psych and polygraph. Well, NO ONE was contacted for the background investigation ... not a single person listed. Earlier this week he was called to take the Medical exam, yesterday he had the Psych test and today was told he didn't qualify based on the resutls of the Psych test. He's almost 41. We're wondering if he was ever even considered for the positon ... and maybe they just needed a "reason" to DQ him? I just can't figure out why his background investigation was never done. Very odd... Of course we are disappointed. He has always wanted to be a police officer and the timing was just never right. I guess the timing never will be right or maybe he's just not cut out for it? The psych testing was 7 hours of testing. One test had 700 questions, another had 400 questions a third had about 200 questions and then he met with a doc for about 10 minutes. Does anybody have any advice/insight? Would he be considered for other counties or would they see he didn't pass the psych test and automatically DQ him? Is there any way to "prepare" for psych tests??? |

| Posted about 1 month ago In todays budget situation I don't think they sent him to the psych unless he had already passed the background. I think a a psych eval runs us about $750.00. (The medical is another $400.00 ) Most of the time if the department will give the doctor permission the doctor will discuss the eval with the applicant. Tell him not to give up. Differnent agencies are looking for differnt things in persons that they hire and a department psych is aware of the profile of the type officer that the department is looking for. Not all departments are looking for the same type personality. They are looking for the right "fit" for the deparetment and the community in which he/she will serve. So although he might not be the right fit at your local agency he might be just what another agnecy is looking for.
Best of luck. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Isn't part of the background contacting all the people you have to list as references? Nobody was called... so weird. And while he was taking the written tests (on computers) every 10 minutes or so there was a pop up saying "Your age is 40 ... yes or no". How odd is that??? He is going to call his recruiting officer on Monday. He wants to understand what happened. If it's truly his age he just wants to know so he doesn't spin his wheels, miss time from his current job, etc... only to be shut down again. If it's something else he wants to understand that as well. |

| Posted about 1 month ago I can only speek for our Dept. But the majority of our back ground checks are through NCIC, FBI, and local and state agencies. We only contact personal references if there are specific questions that come up. i.e A hit on a criminal record that may be a simple mistake that can be cleared up by interviews. Hope this helps.
BTW his age would not be a factor here. And I imagine there are many places with the same ideas we have. So if it is truely his dream. Then my advice is try other agencies and never give up. Speak softly. And carry a big stick. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Thanks BMorgan! That's actually really helpful. He was feeling really discouraged. So even if one agency's psychological test wasn't a "match" another one could be? I have encouraged him to press on ... his biggest concern is time off his current job. In the job market right now he is fearful of missing work - it's hard to hold onto a job these days. He missed four days of work due to tests and appointments with the agency that turned him down. He would hate to do that again. I think it's worth it.
Thanks again for the feedback ... I really appreciate it. |
