One source for those wishing to asist the troops is called Books For Soldiers. You can visit the web site at www.booksforsoldiers.com and see what they're about. It's not open to the public in general, you have to submit an application form and be approved before you're allowed access to the soldiers' names, addresses and requests. The site is a place for soldiers and unit commanders and chaplains to make requests - not just for books, as the name would imply - but for anything and everything needed by the troops. Toiletries, socks, candy, snacks, DVDs, CDs, magazines and much more. Chaplains use the site to request mail and care packages for soldiers who aren't getting mail from home. 7. FROM: ABCcop
This is not Iraq, but it would still do some good. Just an idea from one of my Sgts if interested. A Recovering American Soldier c/o Walter Reed Army MedicalCenter 6900 Georgia Avenue,NW Washington , D.C. 20307-5001 8. FROM: Gilady588
I believe that if you know what division is in command of the forward base operation you can send the mail to them and they will distribute it to the various unit. Or you could go online and look up USO and they will have addresses of where to send soldiers mail. I will see if I have the site I use to go to when I was deployed to look up mail from people in the states and respond to their letters. 9. FROM: TprUSMC

| Posted about 1 month ago Another option for your consideration: a-chaplain.org</a>">www.adopt-a-chaplain.org">www.adopt-a-chaplain.org Adopt-A-Chaplain supports our troops by supporting the Chaplains in the field with ALL sorts of items. Last I remember they had sent more than 14,000 care packages over to the Sandbox...containing such things as personal hygene items, phone cards, candy and snacks, coffee and donuts, greeting cards (Christmas, Mother's Day, etc) for the troops to send home, and table games. They even arranged a real American bar-b-que for one group deployed overseas. From their website: Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat is Adopt-a-Chaplain?Adopt-a-Chaplain is a Christ-centered ministry, the only national charity that exclusively serves deployed chaplains. Our goals: to provide prayer and spiritual support for the chaplains themselves and to provide tangible support that will enable chaplains to more effectively minister to the soldiers they serve. How did Adopt-a-Chaplain start? We began in January 2005 through correspondence by Dan Hoebeke with a single chaplain in Afghanistan who was going through spiritual warfare. Later, Dan and his wife Ellen to sent him boxes of comfort foods which led to an introduction to additional chaplains. A discussion with Dan’s Friday morning men’s group resulted in their involvement. They in turn introduced it to our church’s Sunday morning adult group. It then expanded to the church as a whole and from there to other churches in the San José, California area. In July 2006 we received front page coverage in a number of local newspapers and word spread nationally. How many chaplains do you serve? We regularly serve more than 100 chaplains in Iraq and Afghanistan. Through them we reach over 100,000 soldiers. How do you select chaplains to help?We don’t. All that a chaplain needs to do is to request adoption. Jesus welcomed people at whatever stage they were in their life journey. We try to do the same. How do we know you are legitimate?Adopt-a-Chaplain is endorsed by America Supports You, the official Defense Department organization governing grass roots troop support efforts. Dan also had the privilege in February 2007 to meet personally with President Bush to brief him on the ministry. Are contributions tax-deductible?Yes. While our application for tax exempt status is pending, checks made payable to “Cornerstone Life Foundation” will provide the deduction. Where do you receive your funding? All financial support comes through contributions by individuals and groups. Corporations often supply needed materials and funds to cover the cost of shipping. We receive no federal funding. How much of these contributions actually go into ministry?Every cent. Adopt-a-Chaplain is completely volunteer-run. All contributions with either go into the cost of purchasing supplies or to pay postage (our greatest ongoing expense). All publicity materials, brochures and other administrative costs are separately underwritten by generous donors. Is Adopt-a-Chaplain political?Adopt-a-Chaplain takes no position on political issues. We support the chaplains simply because they must be equipped spiritually and tangibly in order to minister to the soldiers who serve our country. What happens when a church or other group adopts a chaplain? You are given all of the contact information for “your” chaplain. We anticipate that you will correspond with him or her directly. In that way, you will become personally involved in the chaplain’s ministry and find out first-hand what will be most helpful to that chaplain. Do individual groups support chaplains alone? No. In fact there may be other groups working with this chaplain as well. The main office of Adopt-a-Chaplain keeps general track of what supplies are being sent from all sources to each chaplain, ensuring that the chaplains’ total needs are being met. Can I contact a chaplain directly? No. Chaplains trust us to protect their confidentiality and security, and there is greater potential for problems if individual contacts are allowed. We are, however, most willing to forward letters to chaplains and give them an opportunity to respond as they see fit. What do the chaplains need most?By far the most common request is for prayer. Pray for the chaplains, their spiritual strength, their message to the troops, and, of course, their families back in the states. We also have an up-to-date list of the items they request for ministry. Is Adopt-a-Chaplain run by any particular church or denomination? No, we are independent by design. Individual churches and denominations are welcome to partner with us as affiliates. |

| Posted about 1 month ago Can't write to "Any Soldier" at Walter Reed or any post. Letters and cards will go into the dead letter file. Because of security concerns these days, to write a soldier, one needs an actual address. The American Red Cross WILL sponsor mail to soldiers this holiday season. Check it out at: http://www.snopes.com/politics/christmas/soldiercards.asp or http://www.redcross.org/email/saf/

| Posted about 1 month ago Just got this today. Maybe a few of you would take on the task and send a few items to Sgt Renner. Please remember that anything we send over and above will be shared by his buddies. Thanks in advance and God Bless. FROM: "fbellino", Frank Bellino My son-in law is finally settled here is his address SGT Renner, Stephen He is sharing a room (converted connex box) with two other guys. Stephen also told me that Audie Murphy was in the same brigade he is in now, which he thought was pretty cool. He has mentioned that the PX at Al Asad is very low on supplies right now, so if you're thinking of sending a care package, you can bet he doesn't have most things readily available (not including toothpaste or toiletries, but more like gel insoles, gold bond powder, Ben Gay, etc). He loves beef jerky, and, if anyone is hunting this season, deer jerky. He does have a PSP and iPod if you'd like to get him games or iTunes cards for Christmas. While is was in Afghanistan, he seemed to really enjoy "manly" toys (like remote-controlled helicopters), DVD movies and cigars. Currently, he and his buddies are hooked on Dane Cook. I bought him all of the live comedy shows on CD recently and they've been passed around for all to enjoy, so another gift idea may be some of your favorite comedy to provide some stress relief. Of course, he doesn't expect anything, nor has he asked for anything specifically, but I thought I'd throw out some ideas in case you were wondering what it is he might like outside of a letter and a prayer.
