I used this phrase back in 1977 when I joined the Virginia Beach PD.  Before that I used it when I joined the sheriff''s office in NY.

Does this line still work today at interview boards, or have the countless applicants who test before police agency hiring boards brainwashed the managers?

The phrase, standing alone, means nothing.  It has become a cliche.  It would be your answers to the followup questions such as "How do you intend to do that?"  or Why do you want to help people?"  that would get you the job.

Exactly, Any tips when it comes to the Oral Board?

I feel as if I might choke when asked a question I can't readily answer.

i remember using that in a few... and from friends that sat across the table had told me... that it is to general.  cause everyone says that.

try along this line, that you want to be able to be the voice for someone who cant talk, or is afraid too, that youwant to help the weak, scared or injured in thier time of need.

for me, that is still my answer, although it be worneout and general, that is why i do what i do.  dealing with the kinds of people that i do, and will keep doing as long as i can, whether in LE capactiy or SEO capacity.

You should know why you want to be a police officer in general and a police officer for the specific department that is looking to hire you.  The best tips are as follows: be yourself and be honest.  If you don't know the answer to a question, be honest and say so.

Frankly...I hate this response! I would rather have a candidate tell me that they wanted to arrest bad guys and lock them away than "help people" Wanna help? Be a social worker! Nothing against social workers (my oldest son is a social worker for the VA), but when I hear this answer, I think of the "helpful" officers that I have known... too scared to make an arrest or to jump in when needed...just want to "help people"...phooey, I say!
