Should LEO's have an annual fitness test?

Posted about 1 year ago Just curious of others thoughts. I know most agencies don't have an annual physical agility test. Do you think they should? |

| Posted about 1 year ago Not a bad idea. When I started in 1988, one of our state departments had an annual test. problem was his run time was "adjusted" so that he would not be looking for a new job. He had two other attempts in the year and failed. So it needs to be strict. Also I think that an officer should be given paid work out time like firefighters, |

However, the only problem with that is alot of us are patrolling or on call to the point that we need to stop what we are doing and go. The firefighters always have to suit up no matter what, so it makes it easier to give them that paid work out time. Maybe if they extended our time so that part of it was a mandatory workout time, and the rest of the time spent doing our assigned duties, they could work that out. Who knows. |

This could be done in conjunction with an annual agility test." An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"! Being a Tyrant does not make one a Leader! |

| Posted about 1 year ago Yes... I think it would weed out allot of folks who dont need to be on the streets anymore... There is Fire Dept here that requires a PT test annualy... If you fail you get 6 month to get in shape.. if you fail again you are suspended without pay until you pass it I think its 15 days... If you fail it again... You are Fired... but they also have 3 hours a day dedicated to workouts... While they wait on a call... we are not afforded that ability... but I am sure something could be worked out to benifit all involved. |

| Posted about 1 year ago I not so concerned about taking people off the streets but more concerned about finding life threatening conditions before they are too late. This job of ours takes a toll on the body and the mind. Just look what it did to me! Being a Tyrant does not make one a Leader! |

| Posted about 1 year ago YES, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes - jump on youtube sometime and type "police fight" in the search bar. It is really scary watching a cop getting his ass handed to him and having his gun taken away by a criminal. Keep in mind that the "trash" in our corrections system that is scheduled to get out in 5 years has NOTHING productive to do but work out, run, compare notes with killers, and think of ways to get YOU when he gets out. Don't let this happen. You must survive. In order to do that, you MUST be in shape. TRAIN LIKE YOUR LIFE DEPENDS ON IT - BECAUSE IT DOES! Had to edit - NICE AVATAR Henry - LOL! And the officers have to find their own time and pay for a gym to go work out in.....it doesn't make sense to me....sorry, went a little off topic there........ Kyle313

| Posted about 1 year ago KYLE... iagree with you. My former PD pushed for a gym and went in with the fire dept on equipment. Then the union pushed for workout time after or before shift. You might want to give it a try. It would be great if prisons went back to the ball and chain work groups. I know there are a few, we need more. Make them work and HATE it. I remember when I first started in a county jail as a CO. This dirt ball came in and did not care that he was going to prision again. He stated it's not bad. You get free meals, medical treatment and an education, heck I can even work out and not pay a gym membership. He stated he'd do his time and get back out. I was shocked but that it the truth and mentality. |

| Posted about 1 year ago I work in a Correctional Facility and we have to pass one each week in the academy...every Monday....to include day one......after that you are not required to pass one to maintain employment......the department does a PT test once a year and offers a bonus for those officers that take it and pass....sorta their incentive to stay in shape...The bonus would easily pay for a one year membership at a gym of your choice...which is what most who take it use it for....the standards aren't what they should be up to in my opinion but I'm told they are comparable to other departments standards that do require testing.....To be on CERT though you need to pass a PT test of higher standards and maintain to stay on the team...... | Posted about 1 year ago krissyjames said: Sheriff Joe Arpaio has set the ultimate model of how to run a prison - I am not 100% sure, but ALMOST POSITIVE that there are no weights, etc. for those inmates - I guess if all departments could aford to send their officers to train with the Marines at Parris Island and also to be fluent with the Isreali Krav Maga, it woudl even the playing field.......a LITTLE. But sticking a bunch of meatheads in a room together with no motivation other than to get stronger, learn how to take your sidearm away, and beat down the one enemy they have - US.......it's not a good thing. I have talked to many friends who said that coming out of the academy, they felt like they were pieces of meat just waiting to be served up. Not enough training , time, money at the academy to train to be WARRIORS........not enough manpower/time once hired to work out or follow up with hand-to-hand fighting/grappling (ju-jitsu,etc). It's unfortunate that you must sacrifice personal time with family to make sure you can survive a brutal attack and come out on top. Just something to think about. Troll...the other white meat. | Posted about 1 year ago Our dept gives us the opportunity (if staffing numbers permit) an hour a day when we're working nights and on holidays/weekends for daywork to utlitize the gym they have set up here. Not alot of time to do a real workout so I usually am limited to 30 min on a eliptical/treadmill and 10-15 min for anything else before I gotta get back to locker room to shower and change back into uniform.

| Posted about 1 year ago I think every department should have one. Lets look at what we are dealing with. Today you have to be in shape, it's not just for the job but you own safety. Lets look at the Sheriff's office for example, they are in mosy jails with some of the worst people you can possibley be around, the men/women have only time on thier hands, hitting the weights just about anytime they want, because that's all they have to do. So first of the all the sheriff's or detention officers have to deal with them, then if they do get paroled or released then we as police officers have to deal with them. But the most important thing is our own health. What do we do? For the most part we sit in a car 8-10-12 hours a day and some days do nothing. It is good for our own good and keeps out heart, lungs and so on in check. |

| Posted about 1 year ago I agree all LE, police and corrections should have standards and I would like to see re testing quarterly rather than yearly and a yearly physical on top of that. Lets face it most of us start in our early 20’s, ready to go and in the best shape of our lives. Then we sit in a car too many hours of the day or behind a desk or walking a tier. We can’t always help it, it’s just the way the job goes, then when have to act it’s in my experience not the old guy that is the issue. It’s normally the 16-24 year olds that we 30-40 or 50 something year old officers are dealing with and we are to do it with only enough force to gain control.
Make a standard that is in line with the job requirements and enforce it without consideration for age or gender, one standard for all and ALL MUST PASS! |

| Posted about 1 year ago I think it's a good idea, it's a good way to stay in shape and better protect yourself if you are in a situation that you have to defend yourself. I think that officers should learn the basics in some kind of martial arts. I am not a LEO yet, but I do plan on it once I graduate. |

| Posted 11 months ago I THINK IT SHOULD BE MANDATORY FOR OFFICERS TO TAKE A ANNUAL FITNESS TEST. I ALSO BELIEVE THE DEPARTMENT SHOULD BE RESPONCIBLE IN GETTING AND KEEPING UP A PLACE TO WORKOUT. ALOT OF THE PROBLEM TODAY IS OFFICERS DON'T HAVE A PLACE TO GO TO WORKOUT. |

| Posted 11 months ago I like the idea of an annual fitness test. There are more than a handful of officer that I work with that wouldn't be able to pass it. As it is now it is optional, if you take it and pass you get a ribbon. We are in the publics eye and if we are out of shape then it makes us look bad- ie the pig/donut jokes. |

| Posted 11 months ago I believe that having an annual test will only be for the better for everyone that works, we are trying to convince our boss now that we need a gym at our facility ( for staff only ) but it's turning out to be a event. Not everyone would use it but at least it would be offered. Were not even asking to be paid to work out, just have it on the facility property so we can use it before or after shift. |

| Posted 11 months ago Absolutely! Non-LEO here but planning on it after graduating. I also plan to see my kid every night when I get off work. Train as if your life depends on it, because it does. You can't cure stupid. |

| Posted 11 months ago I agree with you chrism. It is also helpful when you can get in and out of the car fast. My department is in the process of changing their physical skills test. It has been changed twice since I have been employeed with them. Your safety depends on your fitness level. |
