I'm in a small department and am starting to use a motor for traffic enforcement. I know it's very small scale, but I want to make sure we are doing it right. Anybody got suggestions?

What specifically are you asking? Type of motorcycle? Types of traffic control strategies....? What?

I just rewrote our policy for our motor. Can't get much smaller than ours since we only have one. We started ours out with a 3 year grant from Highway Safety and now we get a brand new bike every year. Give us more info and you will have people jumping all over this. The only thing I don't think anyone has thought of yet is how to prevent you from contracting cancer.... (sorry, inside joke)

"how to prevent you from contracting cancer…. (sorry, inside joke)" Great play on words, Chief. I'm afraid this is going to be another post where the question is asked and we never hear from the guy again... I hope he proves me wrong.

Doesn't make sense when you look at the profile. Of course, he may be nearly my age and just forgot where he was. Got up to go to the bathroom and then went to bed....

I HATE when that happens!! The problem is when you get up to go to the bathroom but meant to go to the kitchen.... Oh wait, that is training or repetition, I forget.

Sorry folks, got busy and didnt make it back. (yeah, the old age got to me again...

The answers...

'07 Electraglide. I've got a Falcon HR handheld with a fixed mount on the handlebars (sometimes I may actually use the mount). I've got a camera on the way to mount as well as a MDT the boss wants me to have.

The city is small (7000+) with an interstate and a state highway running through. Plenty of traffic and very difficult to work from a car.

Chief, any chance of a copy of that policy so I can have a starting point?

thanks for any ideas you can help with.

I wish there had been a place like this when we started our program in 2002. We learned a lot of things the hard way. When you start from scratch there are things to learn that you haven't even anticipated. One area we could have used help with was in equipping the officers. Things like what to look for in breeches and boots, helmets, jackets etc... I can tell you this, you usually get what you pay for in regards to motor equipment. Good quality breeches are EXPENSIVE BUT the last a LONG TIME! Same for the boots with one exception. Chippewa boots can be bought for a bout $200 and they are very comfortable. They hold up well too but try them on or order them from a company that will allow you to exchange them. Their Trooper model is a great boot but for the last few years they have been building it with a VERY large stack. Unless you have gigantic calves they just don't look right. If you need to stay in that price point go with the polishable Engineer boot. It is the same height and general construction (with the addition of buckles) but the stack isnt as large around. If you can afford them; go with Dehners. They are the bomb!
I don't know what your uniforms look like but we wear LAPD blue shirts and trousers. Two years ago we switched to white shirts on the motors in the extreme summer heat. It is much cooler and your are more visible to traffic in the white too. Just a few thoughts...

Before having anything installed, lights, radio, chargers, etc. etc.  Check with surrounding agencies and find a good installer and troubleshooter.  Some of our Kawasaki's are a wiring nightmare.  Bids to fix the bad job were over a grand per motor.  Don't take a low bid, look for quality.  Go LED, almost no drain on battery.   Ride Safe
