My Chief received information that another agency in our state (Oregon) has received a public records request for patrol officers names and 'badge' numbers. They deny being antipolice--website is 'under construction' and says 'you have the right to be informed' on it. Anybody else hear of these folks? Public info is public info but I'm concerned about what they are trying to accomplish here.

Nothing under google for them

Check out these links - it appears nobody is very thrilled with their requests, also a link to the owner or the site

http://tdcaa.infopop.net - then click on civil then look for "PIA request"

http://www.linkedin.com/in/ginosesto

Several references made toward them. The links you find on Google and Yahoo are full of apparel and bumper stickers for their site.

I can't imagine the site as being positive toward law enforcement. Probably an upstart site intended to gather information from customers on certain police officers... just my guess.

Also - in checking LiveSearch, Ask, and Lycos I stumbled across these in reference to ratemycop.com:

http://officerratings.com/

--------------------------

This site has a list of all the domains that had expired as of July 2007...ratemycop.com is about 3/4 of the way down the list.

Howdy RPL,

If I remember right the domain gets a one month grace period before it is nuked, it would appear that in the whois registry that it was picked up again on August 5th 2007 and is due to expire on the same date in 2008, which would probably solidify what I thought of the domain "grace period". And there is not a name associated with the contact information usually given....hmmm. Then it would appear that the domain ratecops.com is redirected to that same addy of ratemycop.com.

They are based out of Los Angeles, supposedly. From a little bit of research the owner of the domain doesn't seem to be pro-LEO.

Just my opinion, but they are like.......noses....yeah, yeah.

sounds like a new place for people to go to bitch about their speeding ticket.. no doubt they'll put a link to here so everyone can come to "Ask A Cop" and ask if we know officer x and ask about their "ticket or warning" situation.. the guy one of the links is to seems to be a high school educated whiner.. probably had his share of run-ins with LAPD and CHP.. whatever, he's stupid and is gonna stay that way, and the public will feel how they want about officers..

Like it or not, FOIA and public disclosure requires they be provided the information they are asking for. Failure of your agency to provide the information within specific time frames will result in major fines or civil assessments. We just had to provide our deputies names and numbers. No way around it. I suspect this site will become a forum for cop bashing, but the law is the law. Our State is trying to pass legislation that will shield officers information, but its not in place yet. You are not required to give them personal information, but names and I.D. numbers are public information and must be disclosed

None of our local departments have info on this site..I rate our cops awesome :) We need a nation wide publicity push to bring out the merits of LE to the general public. It is sad that the only news that gets out is the snippets of the bad. There should be no child in the US afraid of LEO's and it is up to us to change it. Yea I would be happy to" rate my cop". I would be happy to let people know about the good for a change ! Officer safety is the biggest concern and I wouldn't want any part of it, if it has the potential of endangering an officer or their family. If this isn't a concern with this particular site,,,wouldn't it be nice if everyone rated their department as the best of the best ;)

THIS SIT WAS SHUT DOWN BY GO-DADDY! This is the info from a Los Angeles Police Dept web site-hope it helps!

News Article About RateMyCop Website Shutdown
(I am sure the site will appear again on the Internet in the near future but just wanted to share the latest news on why you have not been able to view it. Thanks to member Lynn Cummings for passing this along)

Go Daddy shuts down police-rating Web site
Posted by Elinor Mills

Domain hoster Go Daddy has shut down a Web site that lets people criticize individual police officers, saying it was using too much bandwidth. But the site owner says he is being censored after police complained.

Up until Tuesday, visitors to RateMyCop.com were able to post comments and ratings on specific police officers. The site disclosed officer names and badge numbers, which is public information.

Late last week, KGO TV in San Francisco ran a news story saying that police officers wanted the site shut down, claiming it puts them at risk by revealing their information.

On Wednesday, the site continued to be offline displaying a message that says "Oops!!!" and urged the site owner to contact Go Daddy.

RateMyCop founder Gino Sesto contacted the company and was initially told the site was shut down for "suspicious activity," according to Wired News. Then a supervisor told him the site had exceeded its 3 terabyte bandwidth limit, but Sesto disputes that, telling Wired News: "How can it be overloaded when it only had 80,000 page views today, and 400,000 yesterday?"

Go Daddy spokesperson Elizabeth Driscoll told CNET News.com that the site was using six times the amount of bandwidth allotted for its $15-a-month "shared server" plan. "Basically, he was paying for a compact car, when he really needed a semi-truck. The customer was not willing to work with our staff to resolve the issue," she wrote in an e-mail. "The situation was absolutely NOT about censorship in ANY way."

This isn't the first time Go Daddy has been accused of censoring a site because of outside pressure. A year ago, it pulled the plug on a security list Web site, after giving the site owner less than an hour notice, after MySpace complained that there its members' usernames and passwords were archived on the site. After that incident, CNET News.com asked a Go Daddy executive under what circumstances would it suspend a customer's domain name based on the content of the Web site, in the absence of a court order. "Go Daddy takes action to suspend a domain name in cases where the domain name is being used for, or in association with, illegal activities. Our most common instances involve phishing sites, child pornography Web sites, terrorist sites, and the like,"

Go Daddy General Counsel Christine Jones said. "As an established partner with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, we also take action based on sites that pose a significant threat to or exploitation of children--as was the case in this instance."

Just to kinda bring you coppers up to speed on this-3.

It appeared on the Los Angeles area news early this week-it is a LA Based web site and is exactly what many expected-A place to bash and whine about coppers. In fact, when I saw it on the news I went up and looked at it. I found my name and info on it-but no posts. I also saw some horrible remarks from one poster about one of our officers who was murdered in the line of duty last month-the comments were so bad they are not worth repeating.

I complained as did other coppers. The Los Angeles Police Union basically said, "well we can't do anything" which is par for the course. It appears that enough of us complained and the site was closed (for whatever reason). I looked over the site and saw some clear problems with it-first their web site sucked it was hard to use and slow.

If you have a common name like I do-it was impossible to make sure that the user posted remarks on the correct name-common names like, 'JONES, GREEN, SMITH,WASHINGTON,JOHNSON, ECT..." were real problematic becuase most of us only have our last names on our tags-so the user had to "guess" which name to comment on. Small depts did not have this problem. Also, I would think that this web site owner leaves himslef open to lawsuits in other states if they do not handle this information correctly-and as we all know, not every state it like California-some states and areas take protecting officers and their lives serious.

So, I hoope these two articals help

Stay safe! It's a jungle out there!

This website shows an adress down on "Pico Blvd" in the central part of LA, California-it appears to be a good location.

This website has been getting alot of attention and most of it is bad. I think due to the bad systems they use it can be "crashed" by having lots of people trying to use it. It is also real slow and frustrates users.

This is nothing more than "cyber terrosim" and a means to try and intimidate coppers into NOT doing our jobs. This is just a means for some anti-cop nut case to grab attention and spread his venom nation wide-it has nothing to do with "protecting people."

I would keep the owner of this site busy by complaining to the ISP TOS violations, also consider making him remove posts you find harmful, or in violation of his TOS-that should keep him busy!

Just kind of a heads up on this topic; anything to do with the name of the “Los Angeles Police Department” is (for the most part) protected by copyright laws. So, based upon the below info, it appears that our worthless union may now put down their coffee cups and “try” and do somehting about this. Also, the LAPD does not allow it’s “Offical” web page to be “hyperlinked” to another web page unless permission was given by The LAPD. So, for those of you out in Cop Land, you may wanna chat with your local department leaders and consider this.

This is the LAPPL’s statement!

Tuesday, March 11, 2008 Response from the Protective League re the RateMyCop Website (Below is a release today by the League about the controversial website. As many of you may have found, the RateMyCop website is currently “down” as of this afternoon. It is unknown if this is due to technical or legal reasons) To: All League Members Subject: RateMyCop Website

The Los Angeles Police Protective League recently received numerous calls from members regarding the RateMyCop Website. The Website lists the names of all LAPD officers, as well as officers from other agencies. We have been informed by our attorneys that, unfortunately, the Website is legal and protected by the Freedom of Information Act.

The League is currently exploring possible copyright violations. Once we have come to a final opinion on this issue, we will notify you via e-mail.

I think any one in a state jobs should not be free for the public to look up and research... you dont see FBI or homeland having this issue because you wont find their information listed so why should the cops be any different...

Ok here is a thing that has started to take place-certainly in Los Angeles and those in LAPD. Coppers are logging in to this web site and "rating" LAPD command staff, our union people, and the supervisors! Man the stuff that is now showing up-I mean the dirt! Look up the police union pres, or some of the LAPD captains! Who needs "phone jackets" now with this web site! With a city as big as LAPD it is hard to get the 411 on bad apples (CAPT's, LT's and SGT's) well now you can-USE THIS SITE!

Also, if you see a copper on your department who is getting slammed by some idiot-you can "back him/her up" and post something good about them-this webs site does not require any "proof" that a comment is correct. In one case I found a copper who was being slammed-so if you look at his name now, "he is a hero of saving this babies life!" GOD YOU GOTTA LOVE THIS SITE AND THOSE WHO DREAMED IT UP!

I have to agree with babeblu, about the need for positive publicity.
Before my kids started kindergarten, I took them up to the local PD to meet the officers (most of whom watched me grow up). Now I overhear them tell others about the trip, and telling young children that a police officer is one of the very best friends you can have.
LE requires a strength of mind and character few possess. It takes heart, courage, and street smarts.
That's why so many people "cop bash". They know that they will never, in a million years, be able to measure up to the men, woman, and 4 legged people who join the LE family every year.

If their ever was a time in which I would condone the behavior and actions of computer hackers, this would be it.

This guy Gino and his website(s) need to be shut down.  The website can be dangerous for the police officers listed on it.

yup our whole department is on it.  and yes it was through the freedom of info thing that they got all our names.  only three of our officers have been rated and all of them have been rated satisfactorily....

Will PL please appreciate the LEO for a change?
