Dealing with the OPBA

Posted 10 months ago Im the union Rep for our deputies, and was approached by member today, who heard a rumor. Seems a deputy from another county was en route to an off duty detail, in uniform, in a cruiser and was involved in an accident. When he asked the Union to represent him on the department and/or civil inquest, they told him that since he wasn't "On Duty" for a regular shift, they weren't able to help. Apparently, it was also clarified that if you are on your way to work, or home from work, in uniform, in a marked car, the same policy applies. Now, I've heard from other Counties' Deputies in the past say that their attorneys were "kick-ass" and took great care of them, and other say "not-so-much". I'm going to call and check on this, but has anyone else run into a jam like this? 100 Years from now ..... all new people !! |

| Posted 8 months ago Brooks, I just came across your post. I posted something very similar in my room about officers being injured while working off duty details. We had an officer lnjured in December while he was directing traffic at a church (Off Duty). He was in uniform, in his jurisdiction and was struck by a drunk driver. The Dept. checked with workers comp and was advised that he was OFF DUTY which makes him a private contractor. We are OPBA and I think that they are trying to fight for him (NOT SURE) but what it comes down to is that the department could just pull all of our off duty projects. Hope this helps. |
