I'm guessin that they mean an academy graduation certificate, is Colorado its called POST certification Peace Officer Standards and Training. So, if you have not attended an LE academy yet, thats what they are looking for.

Yes, you must attend a Certified Police Academy and take a State Certification test to get certified.

Mike,

Depending on the state that you are in, the P.O.S.T. Certification is different. Here in Missouri, we have different classes. I have a Class A Certification which means that I attended a Certified Police Academy for 640 training hours. The Class B Cerification is 470 training hours. I attended the Eastern Missouri Police Academy in St. Peters, Mo. back in 2000 which had 2 classes consisting of a full time daily 6 month course and a part-time nightly 1 year course. Since I was working full time, I attended the part-time course.

Every state is different. In NY the department you are accepted to provides their own academy. Get the correct answer from someone in Florida.

I went originally in Florida. You have to find a college that has an academy and enroll. Most places you will pay for this on your own. Once you complete the academy you will pay FDLE $200 and take the State Officer Certification Exam. The results of this will be in after about 2 weeks. You will give the results sheet (copy) and the academy certificate to the agency you are applying with. Once hired the agency will apply to FDLE for your actual certification.

Complete a FL police academy and then pass the state exam.

sounds strange, generally they hire you then send you to the academy.

KSP, they have a pay your own way and ones where the agency pays your way here. The bad thing is upwards of 40-50% will never get hired for one reason or another. But the school that sponsers the academy (such as Florida Community College Jacksonville) makes money on each student so they want lots of students rather than a selective few.

Mike you need to contact the department that you want to work at and see if they are sponsoring anyone for training. I too live in FL and want to become a police officer.  If they are not sponsoring you can go to SCC College in Sanford and apply for the Police academy. You will have to pay for this out of you own pocket.

I am checking at other departments to see if I can get sponsored.

So basically they don't want to pay for you to go through academy they want someone else to do it?

You're not going to find many depts in Fl anymore that will hire you THEN send you to the acad. Talk to most any community college and they'll get you in the right direction. You can also go to the FDLE website and see the minimum requirements. Assuming you pass an academy you then have to pass the state cert test. THEN you go job hunting.

You better be patient..... it aint gonna happin over night!
