Posted 9 months ago My wife and I are thinking about going to Negril Jamacia later this summer on vacation. I heard there can be safety concerns, does anyone know any different or have any vacation nightmares? |

Posted 9 months ago You cant leave the compound that the resort is on, unless you are in a large group like a tour. jamaica is dangerous.

Posted 9 months ago I proposed to my wife at Rick's Cafe in Negril (known for their beatiful sunsets) and spent our honeymoon in Negril as well the following year. Both times we stayed at teh Sandals resort. The resort is well protected by staff, but the surrounding areas are plagued with crime and have a high gang population. It has been said that the gangs actually run the towns as they outnumber the local police. The Jamacian economy is in a tailspin which only adds to the country's troubles. I found the resort to be beautiful with fun excursions (not part of the all inclusive package) and the staff will cater to your every whim. We have actually been looking toward St. Lucia or Antigua for our next trip. Hope this helps.....

Posted 8 months ago mikew70 said: I have been to Jamiaca and it is absolutely beautiful. but then again we didnt go for a long time and only there. it was part of thecruise ship tour. have you considered going there with the cruiseship first and geting a day or two out of it and if you really like it plan a trip only there. atleast with the cruiseship you are not pressured to stay on the island if you do not feel comfortabale.just a suggestion.

Posted 7 months ago I have been there. Beware that the people will try to sell you anything. The whole place is like a car dealership....funny at first then it gets annoying. Other than that Its a great place. I recommend if you can hike the Dunn's River Falls.

Posted 6 months ago Negril is a beautiful area and just as safe as other resort areas. Another area you may want to consider or visit while you are there is Ocho Rios (absolutely beautiful....have to see Dunn River Falls). I have taught many courses there for the Jamaica Constabulary Force. The resort areas such as Negril they keep a watchful eye on....so you should be safe. Just stay away from the street vendors and the tourist traps. Have a great time if you go.

Posted 6 months ago I have been to Ocho Rios a half dozen or so times and we have always had a wonderful time and been treated very well by the locals. There is crime around, just like any city anywhere in the world and yes Kingston is very dangerous, especially near the airport. Much of it depends on you just being aware of your surroundings and they way you interact with the locals. An exceptionally poor country one of the few things they possess is their pride and respect. If you dis-respect them, you will be treated like shit, or worse. If you show them respect and understand that you are the visitor then they will often go very much out of their way to be kind to you. I would not wander around outside the resort after dark however as that is just disregarding your safety. We hope to visit Mo Bay and Negril someday and with just a little street smarts I expect to have a great time.

Posted 8 days ago About Jamaica. Jamaica is an island of paradise, of fun in the sun, and golf. My wife and a group of our friends go atleast twice a year and have considered purchasing property as retirement. First of all, crimes against tourist according to reports are little to none. All ways stay at all inclusive resorts, where meals and all drinks are included in the price. We go with our friends to Couples Swept-Away in Negril. I recommend that you book your trip with a live travel agent. We allways do. I don't trust online booking agents, had bad experience with them. And don't try to book your trip yourself it won't save you any money either. Couples swept away is in Negril, Jamaica. it is located on the 7 mile beach for all you fitness buffs and a romantic resort dedicated to serving couples. The second place we stay is Grand lido braco for the golf. We mix it up. Stay atleast 10 nights 11 days. 5 nights at couples then 5 nights at grand lido. This is much better than cruising. for starters the rooms are bigger, you pay one price for everything. We go back with our kids. four of them. We recommend beaches by sandals in Negril, accross the road is waterpark for them. We have gone on several tours and attractions, that is an extra cost. It is well worth it. again, never had any problems and never heard of any since we have been. The Jamaican Hospitality is phenominal. The airport is first class no hassle there either. But if your looking for trouble, then ofcourse you are going to find it. Don't be a renagade and you will be fine. if you need more info. just check out blog sites on jamaica to hear what people are talkin about and go to www.visitjamaica.com for further research on tourism.
