I have killed a couple of mule deer while stalking with my bow but never a whitetail. I love stalking hogs down there in Texas. It's such a blast. We hit the feeders first thing in the morning and right before dark and stalk them all day. I have tried stalking whitetails many times but it never seems to work out for me. I prefer short 20 to 30 yard shots with my bow and it's hard to get that close to a whitetail while stalking.

I live in Minnesota, I was out on our last day of archery hunting (Dec. 31 2007). I had a new area to try for the last day, it was a dense woods with a few river bottoms and was just walking around, "stalking", you could call it. While on my way up a hill I encountered a bedded down doe, that rose when i reached the crest of the hill. She stood up and looked at me, at this time i had my bow at full draw, 10-15 yard shot. I said to myself "you dead sucka!" and let go, what i didn't realize was a twig about an inch in diameter was covering the lung/heart area i was aiming for. I watched my Ted Nugent arrow with 100-grain muzzy broad head stick straight into the ground in front of the deer. I was not a happy camper, now I have to think about that shot for the next 9 months before i can get another crack at one.

Stalking can be successful if you keep the wind at your face and walk very slow. In Minnesota I walk from tree to tree mapping out my exact steps.

Sounds like a great game plan (tree to tree). I know that must suck to be that close to have a one inch twig screw the whole thing up. I would have broken the twig off and burned it in my campfire.
