The pursuit ended when the suspect slammed into a minivan while driving the wrong way down a busy Boerum Hill street.

A car thief who snatched a Newark cop's gun during a traffic stop was busted in Brooklyn Friday after a high-speed chase across two rivers, sources said.

The harrowing pursuit ended when the suspect, who was shot in the initial encounter with cops, slammed into a minivan while driving a stolen car the wrong way down a busy Boerum Hill street, authorities said.

"The dude just sped the wrong way down Smith St.," said Eric Erazo, 28. "He ran all the lights over there and ran straight into that minivan. The Newark cops hit him from behind. Boom! Head-on collision. Crazy."

The driver of the minivan suffered minor injuries and the suspect had a bullet wound to the hand, but no one else was hurt during the chase.

The drama began after a Newark cop stopped a small sedan and the driver began reaching under his seat, sources said.

The officer thought the driver was reaching for a weapon and stuck his gun into the car, firing a shot as the vehicle began to drive off, a police source said. The driver rolled up the window, forcing the cop to release the gun into the car. Another officer fired several rounds at the fleeing sedan. The suspect then sped off through the Holland Tunnel and into New York City.

"They were on the wrong side of the street," said Eddie Sandoval, 28, a tow truck driver who watched Newark cops chase the car down Canal St. in Manhattan. "He almost clipped me when he went by."

By the time the car crossed the Manhattan Bridge to Brooklyn, several Newark and NYPD cruisers were in pursuit. The suspect lost control of his car at Smith and Pacific Sts., crashing head-on into the minivan. A Newark police car then rear-ended the suspect's vehicle.

"Cops pulled him out of the car by the window," said Jonathan Maldonado, 14. "All the cops had their guns out. The guy had a gun. He was bleeding from his head and from his back."

The suspect's name was not released, pending charges.
