NHTSA Child Safety Seat Installation
NHTSA Child Safety Seat Installation
This first step in any installation is to know the laws of your state. NHTSA recommends that a child be in a safety seat until they are 8 years old, 80 lbs, AND 4'9" tall.
Seat Selection
All children should remain rear-facing until they are 1 year old AND 20 lbs. This is normally done with an infant seat. While using this seat in transport the carry handle should be locked in the down position. If the child is under 1 and over 20 lbs you should move up to a rear-facing convertible seat. This seat can be turned forward-facing when the child is over 1 and over 20 lbs. These seats are normally good up to 40 lbs. After reaching 40 lbs most children can ride safely in a no-back or a belt positioning booster seat with the seat belt.
Proper Installation
When a seat is properly installed it should not move more than 1 inch at the belt path. This can be accomplished by using the LATCH system or by using the seatbelt. I personally prefer the belt. Most cars have a lockable belt. You can accomplish this fit by buckling the belt through the seat and pulling the seatbelt all the way out, then release it slowly back in. This allows the seatbelt to lock in position without allowing the seat to slip or move. The harness on the seat should be snug with only room for one finger underneath. The harness clip should also always remain fastened and at armpit level.
