Okay, I know that most of you all have some sort of experience with security systems. Some may have only responded to them. Some may own a system in their homes. At any exposure level, knowing the basics is helpful.
Because there are so many angles to look at securtiy systems, I am going to author this article from a customer standpoint. I am asked very often on other forum websites about security systems and what to look for.
So, for your home, you are looking in to purchasing a security system...
First, a security system needs to be securing the doors. That is the least and most basic perimeter detection. Then, there needs to be some sort of interior detection for back-up.
Most systems utilize motion detectors for this. The motion detectors are actually Passive Infrared Detectors (PIR's). They work by monitoring the infrared heat energy in their field of view. Expect one per 1000 square feet of living space, as a good starting point.
A good basic system is going to cover all your doors and at least one PIR for interior detection. One keypad (arming station) at the most used entry point (garage door or front door).
More to come...
